Pats have another player opt out. Source on ESPN says that the league has pushed the opt out date up to this Wednesday.

Says they are surprised by the huge number of players that are opting out.

Why would they be surprised. You offered players $150k plus their contract still being guaranteed next season to sit at home if not $350k if they can make up some cheap Covid-19 susceptibility.

The NFL is going to be a joke this season

Idk...a year of your short career is a significant thing to give up.

Guys chasing greatness would never do it though.

The $150000 guaranteed is incentivizing bottom of the roster guys to opt out. It is literally the same thing that is happening with the $600 unemployment check and low skill workers. Why would the guys with a less than 10% chance of making a roster not take the guaranteed pay day? He keeps his health, makes some money, and can always come back next year.

This is completely wrong.

The 150 is a “ stipend” (read cash advance) that will be taken out of next years salary or they will be on the hook for the 150k if not on a roster. And most of the players opting out don’t have a ton of guarantees in their contract that will be effected in anyway by this

The only possible benefit you get out of this by opting out is delaying your guarantees by a year in case they end up cancelling the season in the middle or before. And in that case, I fully understand someone wanting to secure that guaranteed money, especially for the players at the end of their career without much more time to keep attaining these salaries

You have to pay the 150k back. It isn’t a stipend, it’s an advance

It was supposed to be 7 days after they finalized the agreement, which they finally did yesterday I believe

But the league moved up the date to the 8th because they were worried players would leverage this for a new contract

There’s no way the NFL is going to make a 24 year old black kid pay back $150k next year if he doesn’t make a roster

Maybe not but that’s a huge risk to take for a 24 year old who hasn’t hit a decent payday in the league yet.

Enough risk that the idea that fringe players are opting out for a “guaranteed 150k” is ridiculous

It’s 35 million now but that doesn’t really matter since it was mostly money set to come off the books after this season anyway, if anything the opt outs out the Pats in a less financially stable position going forward because all those contracts are rolling to the following year (and a few of the guys are likely to retire creating dead cap)

I love how some people on here were just so desperate to frame it as lazy players looking for a handout.

I don't think it's a risk at all. If anything it would help the kid be more likely to make the roster so that the team could recoup the $150k through payroll deduction.

If they cut him that money is gone. Might help give him a leg up versus a bubble player that doesn't have that factor.

Actually no you are looking at this from the wrong angle.

Teams are required by rule to spend 88.8% of the salary cap. I seriously doubt that they hold them to this for 2020. So the cap is 198.2 million. If they do not use the full cap amount then they are able to spent that amount on the following year. So roughly 175 million. If they hold to the 88.8% that still leaves 24 million to apply to next year.

So say it does drop to 180 and a lot of team are left scrambling while the Pats will have 204 million to spend.
