I don't think it's a risk at all. If anything it would help the kid be more likely to make the roster so that the team could recoup the $150k through payroll deduction.
If they cut him that money is gone. Might help give him a leg up versus a bubble player that doesn't have that factor.
Teams aren’t keeping around fringe roster guys just to recoup 150k. They lose that on free agent guarantees all the time for guys who don’t end up making the 53
Being a fringe roster guy and taking a year off and not taking advantage of possible spots being open due to more established players opting out, is pretty much the worst option for that kind of player. There’s no real upside to opting out unless you are legitimately concerned about playing this year or you want to protect a high guarantee in your contract (which fringe guys don’t have)
Just admit your whole “omg these guys are just taking the money and running” premise is ridiculous

Teams are required by rule to spend 88.8% of the salary cap. I seriously doubt that they hold them to this for 2020. So the cap is 198.2 million. If they do not use the full cap amount then they are able to spent that amount on the following year. So roughly 175 million. If they hold to the 88.8% that still leaves 24 million to apply to next year.
So say it does drop to 180 and a lot of team are left scrambling while the Pats will have 204 million to spend.
That rule doesn’t have much teeth year to year. Teams just need to “average” the floor over a certain period of time and they know how to move the numbers around to stay compliant while still hoarding cap space for years

My point was those contracts and all their cap implications that were set to come off the books next season, have now tolled to 2021. The Pats were already set to have over 100 mil in cap space next season before the opt outs, but now with Hightower coming back on his deal and possible a few others in a similar situation, they will be in a more complicated cap situation that they would’ve been otherwise, not to mention most expect Chung and Cannon to retire which will create a dead cap hit that wouldn’t have been there or not as high of one if they would’ve played this season out and then retired
Point blank, there’s no huge cap advantage to these opt outs outside of the short term relief for replacement players this season (which it doesn’t seem like the Pats plan to use that option much)

The Belicheck is tanking story only makes sense if he's paying these guys under the table to take a year off. Otherwise why would they do something that could damage their career just to help out the Organization? That makes no sense.

The league will investigate and find the Pats guilty.
Their punishment will be extra compensatory picks in next year’s draft.

don't inject logic to the discussion - clearly it is only about the player. /sarcasm off

There’s no way the NFL is going to make a 24 year old black kid pay back $150k next year if he doesn’t make a roster
Well, don't worry maybe enough white 24 year olds will repay theirs to take up the slack. Kinda like life in general , huh blm ?
