Cam Jordan’s new contract lowers his cap number to below $10 million, I’m told. Was previously set to count as $20 million against the cap. A significant savings for the Saints.

Sportrac has us at + 19 mil. If current.

Good 4 Saints. Thought NFLPA frowned on pay cuts that big.

He probably took a pay cut & restructured the deal to get a signing bonus.

Does not appear to be. Cam is still sitting at a $20M cap hit, and Chase's numbers are estimates.
Don't know any of the other restructure's numbers from pre-restructure to know if those figures hit
Wonder if these moves are to make some more signings, or to make room for Ram's retirement before 6/01 to remove him from the 2026 cap; would need an extra $10.7M

Also don't even need any more room currently for signings with the way we structure them. All the moves we have done so far were planned a year (or years) in advance. I imagine with no news on Taysom the plan for him currently is a post June 1st cut, which would save another 10 mil on the cap this year.
But just because we are making room on this year's cap doesn't mean we are looking to use it all. This just keeps us flexible IF we want to use some, or we will carry whatever is left into next year.
With the space we currently have we can easily sign 3 to 4 more mid to high level starting players, so Cam lowering his number has nothing to do with us on the verge of a move. It was a compromise between us and him because him, Tyrann, and Hill would all be shown the door post June 1st if they didn't/don't reduce their number.

Also, moves not yet reflected in the otc Saints cap calculator:
Mathieu and Jordan paycuts
Godchaux restructure
New deal for Young (showing his remaining bonus money only currently), Reid, Clapp, Jones, and Williams
I'm assuming we are gaining more than we lose when all these are processed, so we should be around 20 mil in space, later gaining 12 mil in space post June 1st if both Ram (2 mil, will be gone) and Hill (10 mil) are gone. Rookies likely to be around 5 mil in space once all signed, but latter round picks won't count on the top 51.

The cap hit for the Saints last season for their draft rookies was just under $9M. Quick glance and it appears they would have been a little over $10M if they drafted at the 9th spot last year. If we assume a 5% increase, that could be closer to $10.5M
Just did a pick-by-pick comparison to 2024 (as you can tell, I really don't feel like doing this tax return reconciliation) and if they selected at these spots in 2024 (9, 40, 71, 93, 112, 131, 184, 248 & 254) they would have had a cap hit of $11.8M for their draft class. $12.4M if you assume a 5% increase from last year

Do you know if the June 1st cut numbers in 2026 for dc is accurate? I know underhill said a few weeks back that there was something about when doing restructures on their site it didn’t accurately update correctly in the calculations

quote:Actually cap hit and effective cap hit are 2 different things, and I should have explained that a bit further for the rookies. Everyone from about the late 4th or early 5th on will not replace anyone in the top 51, which means they are effectively already counting on the cap before being signed. Anyone from the late 3rd to some point in the 4th is only going to cost a bit over the current lowest player, so they aren't counting much more than who is already at the bottom.
The cap hit for the Saints last season for their draft rookies was just under $9M.
1st and 2nd rounders are the ones that really increase the cap, and again it will depend where you pick. Our 1st rounder this year will likely cost 3.5-4 mil over the current bottom players, and the 2nd round maybe 1-1.5 mil, while the rest of our pick will be negligible on the cap.
"Worst case" in total they'll take up 7 mil of the cap compared to the players they are replacing, but likely closer to 5 or 6 mil. I'll look and see if otc has the actual effective cap up.
Edit:
If you look here you can see the actual and effective cap numbers for the picks we current have:
Rookie Pools
Our actual cap spend is about 13 mil, but the effective cap spend will be about 5.5 mil (because they are replacing guys that are already costing about a mil on the cap).

I'll give the Carr numbers a look again, but I think they were working correctly.
The issue is usually when you try to play with the stuff before a restructure in the current year, it won't play nice in future years, but now that the restructure went through I think 2026 is displaying correctly when playing with stuff.
Edit:
It looks like 2026 changes are working just fine, so whatever you do on 2026 should accurately reflect how he should affect the cap next year.
If you are just wondering what he will do to the cap if cut pre June 1st vs post, it saves 10 mil pre and 50 mil post.

Looks like practically everyone is in a holding pattern on bigger name FAs until they come down on price or some team gets too antsy and jumps. Looks like most signings around the league have been for depth like this one (and our last few).
Posted on 3/18/25 at 3:15 pm to bonethug0180
Super strange FA period this year where the top-top names signed early, and then the bottom-of-the-barrel guys who usually sign weeks later started signing, and now some of the mid range guys are still hanging out there
Posted on 3/18/25 at 3:19 pm to Rand AlThor
Yup it's been very odd to see. Normally all the 2nd tier would be just about signed by now, and 3rd tier would be mostly waiting, but instead we did a pretty hard stop largely after 1st tier with most 2nd and 3rd tier waiting, with depth signings only now.

As I recall a similar thing happened last year. I remember some think pieces on it talking about the middle class of the NFL getting squeezed out now
