Tigre, the route Teusday night was about the same length as the traditional Uptown route. (I think the uptown route was .2 miles longer.) I've never seen a MG day crowd anywhere near as close in size and I have walked it from Napoleon to Canal plenty of times.

It wasn't on short notice. That parade has been planned for a few weeks now. It was going to happen win or lose.

that's extremely short notice compared to Mardi Gras, which some people plan years in advance. Also, the win wasn't known until Sunday night, and the outcome of the game absolutely has a huge impact on parade attendance.

I get it. You'll argue ANYTHING that comes off in a positive light for the city of N.O. That's your shtick. It's all good homey.

but the route was much more concentrated in one area with more switchbacks, turns, u-turns,etc compared to the more diverse parts of the city that the big MG parades cover. The Saints Parade was intentionally designed to keep crowds primarily in the CBD, warehouse district, and Quarter....so they would be more concentrated by default by taking out the long St. Charles run.

you are so damn sensitive.

Crowd was more concentrated. It was also much larger than any other parade crowd I have ever seen. Glad we cleared that up.

Limited population? The metro area alone has over a million people. You add in the people from BR and all along the Gulf Coast and you could get to 800K pretty quickly. Hell, I had a group of 14 by us that drove in from Houston.

yes, that's a very limited population to get an 800K crowd on that short of notice, on a weekday.

% wise, it makes 800K pretty unlikely, but could easily have been in the 100's of thousands. Massive, regardless.

How long of a notice do 1.3 million people need to plan to drive downtown? We decided to go a few days before and I live in Covington. Wasn't a whole lot of planning involved. Oh wait we did have to make sure my jersey was clean, and I also had to get my gloves out of the wifes car...

Also, being a weekday made no difference. It's the Saints winning the Superbowl, pretty sure most of the employers and schools of the city understood.

Short notice? As Yat said, this was planned to happen win or lose, and the only question was what time it was gonna be for, and 5pm for the start is a pretty convenient time (the parade didn't get to the end of the route where I was for hours after that). I knew I was going to be there no matter what; once the NFC Championship was over I had planned and done my school work early so I could skip class Monday and Tuesday.

Not to mention a lot of people got off of work and I know some public schools gave kids a half day so they could get out there early and find a spot on the route.

It doesn't make it unlikely at all; to think that a majority of the metro area would attend this is not farfetched at all to me, plus all of the people who flew or drove in from around Louisiana and out of state. I feel incredibly sorry for anyone who cares for New Orleans who didn't attend, too. It was almost like a New Orleans Rebirth Parade more than anything, especially with Mitch leading the parade.

but to people not in NOLA a workday makes a difference, and others posters were saying it was draw for the whole gulf coast.

and i do know multiple people in NOLA that worked on tuesday, also others that were at the parade.

Just saying the % turnout to hit 800K is highly unlikely, imo.

I know that's wrong because I have 503,423 myspace friends who all went. The question is how many more went.

All the anecdotal evidence does seem to point to a uniquely large crowd. I asked yesterday if it was even plausible to squeeze that many people into that small of an area considering they'd be locals in cars and not tourists that flew in and the response I got was people were parking in the streets apocalypse style.

There was more people than MG day by a long shot. I use what I saw in my neighborhood as a benchmark. It was about 3 times anything I've ever seen then, maybe 5.

You don't the fact it was one parade, at one time, makes everything look more slam packed crowded as well? as opposed to more spread out arrivals and departures on mardi gras?
