No QBs taken before us mock drafts

Been seeing a lot of non-QB mocks and most of the guys we have been talking about have been going off the board before we pick (Jordan Davis, Penning, Olave and Wilson). A lot of the mocks have us getting Jameson Williams or Drake London with the first pick, and I have been seeing OT Tyler Smith from Tulsa being mocked to that second pick.
If Willis does make it to pick 19, I could easily see us taking him or possibly trading back (which I know goes against all past history). It looks like the ceiling for Willis is the Panthers at #8 and the floor is the Steelers at #20. If someone wants to jump the Steelers, we will be sitting there at 19.

I wouldn't take a qb at #16, but if we have our pick at #19, I'd probably bite. If it plays out like this though, someone probably calls Philly at #18

Would love to get Williams. Opposite Thomas, he's a speedster and would easily stretch the field. As long as we go OT and WR for first two picks, I'm ok with that. We NEED someone that can create separation.

I don't see Willis making it past the Panthers, Falcons and Seahawks. They all need a QB and one of them is bound to pick him.

Rumors are swirling about QBs dropping because none of them are overly good.

That's not rumors, it's a fact. This is the weakest qb class in a while.

If we skip a top OT at #16 dallas will trade with philly at #18 to get one.

Five months ago everyone was saying that there were likely no or few 1st round worthy QBs in this draft.
Two months ago, talking heads start talking up QBs for views/clicks.
Two days before the draft, the adults confirm what was said at the end of the season.
I think we see maybe one QB go before our pick. Probably Willis. I think some others go at the end of the 1st to get that fifth year option. I just don’t think we see many go off the board before 20/25.

A lot of smoke that Seattle will skip QB at 9 and try to trade back into the back half to grab a QB
For the right price, may be worth dropping from 19 to 40 if no QBs go top 18 (means a lot of quality players are already off the board)

This QB class is pretty damn pathetic...if we're being honest.
Willis is the only QB worthy of a 1st round pick imo. A late 1st at that.
Teams usually end up reaching for QB's though. I just hope the Saints aren't 1 of those teams. That would ruin my draft night.

I do not want a qb in round 1.
We have other holes to fill

I am not saying that a QB will be taken before we pick, but the odds are that at least Willis will be picked before our pick. If you look at every draft this century, a QB has gone in the top 3 picks of the first round, with only EJ Manuel (2013) and Chad Pennington (2000) falling outside of that trend.
Now, this list includes a ton of franchise guys, but guys like Blake Bortles, Mitch Trubisky, and even Trey Lance all rose up their boards during the last few days and were picked higher than expected. QB is a position that GMs don't seem to mind reaching for, and the draft is littered with mid first round bust QBs. I just don't see every team in front of us passing on a QB.

Which is strange when a QB can literally kill a HS and GM career. I get wanting to bring in your own guys, but its always amazed me the number of teams that will continue to take gamble after gamble

You have to look at it as a GM, lets say Terry in Atlanta. Would you rather roll with a retread like Mariotta for a few years and hope you get enough success to keep your job, or would you rather bring in a young guy that could develop into the next Mahomes?
Or better yet, imagine explaining to your owner that you passed on the next Mahomes for a TE, while you spent years playing with replacement level QBs.
When GMs describe QBs, they use so much more characteristic traits than any other position. Hell, the Broncos drafted Tebow in the first round because he had the "it" factor.

I doubt that you talking about the most important position on football field and I got 2 qb going in first round wouldn’t be surprise if 3 get draft in first round

If all the QBs are on the board at 16 I see the Saints trading back. (Or I think they should) If they have a QB target it should be Ridder or Strong and they shouldn't be picked any higher than late 1st or 2nd round.
I'd like to see them pick BAP with both 1st or if they trade down possibly target Ridder.
To me trading up is a mistake. two top 20 rookies on rookie contracts for 4-5 years will help this team more than one top 15 rookie.

I know why they do it, I am just surprised more teams don't take a more conservative approach in the draft and go more aggressive in FA or drafts as it pertains to QBs.
How many 1st rounders did Cincy waste between Palmer & Burrow? How many has Clev wasted before saying frick it and throw everything at Watson? NYJ?

quote:The best option. Pick up an extra contributing player or two instead of drafting a backup qb. Would help this franchise out immensely.

At a minimum, you signal to the Steelers that you are going to take a QB and try to trade back to #20. You don't lose anything, but you could pick up a #3.
