They promoted him to keep him in NOLA. Getting a DC gig in college and a DC gig in the NFL are hardly the same thing.

Saints can't block someone from getting a promotion in the NFL. Only if it's a lateral move.

He has a contract provision that prevented him from going to college but does not prevent him from getting a DC job in the NFL.

Why would the Saints care where he gets another job if what they care about it trying to keep him on staff? if anything, Payton should want Ryan in college football versus in the NFL.
