@AdamSchefter: Former Vikings' G Nick Easton is signing a four-year, $24 million deal with the Saints, per source.

Agreed.

This feels like a massive overpay made in desperation of Unger's sudden retirement. I haven't seen any indication that this dude was worth a shite before being injured, much less after missing a significant amount of time. Obviously I trust the Saints's FO opionion more than my own on the matter, but whatever.

ETA: It may very well be under $5m in guaranteed money, in which case it would be a lotto ticket on a guy they think has potential. But 4/$24m looks bad early.

He frequently did. The rule of thumb (and I can't think of any exceptions) is that if you can play center, you can play guard. Guards can't necessarily play center, though.

One good sign, ignoring the likes of PFF and Rotoworld etc...:

The Vikings wanted him back. He played 12 games in 2017, and they had a really good line that season. Their line fell off a bit last season (contributing to their missing the playoffs), and Easton missed that entire season.

Don't like the deal on first view, but there's still important info still to come. We'll see.

I'm starting to wonder if they didn't know about Unger.

Why would they wait so long to bring in someone.
Paradis signed with carolina for 3 years 29 mil and was the number 1 center, so 9 mil a year

Why did the saints wait so long

Position is listed as a guard. Unger was a center. WTF are you smoking?

Don't know what the saints thinking is on this but it seems like he will get the first shot at center.
Then he can back up peat also.
The position versatility is great but if rather a true center who wasn't out for a year because of a bad back issue.

Why did they wait did Unger really not know.
Wonder if money had anything to do with the Unger situation.

Yeah it’s pretty unheard of for a guard to switch to center

I suspect that Unger brought the possibility up months ago, but wasn't sure. Saints hoped for the best. Unger made the decision a few days ago (when Easton's visit was first announced).

I think that, if they knew that he was retiring for sure, they would have brought in the likes of Paradis.

They also may have faith in Tom/Clapp. We have yet to see the structure of the 4/$24m deal. I've seen the words "up to" used in the value of deals more than ever this offseason. Agents want to make their clients' deals look as good as possible.

This could very well be a contract that looks like:
2019: $2m
2020: $4m
2021: $8m
2020: $10m

with ~$4m guaranteed, and significant incentives in those latter seasons. The 4/$24m number makes me nervous, but I won't freak out until I see the details.

Again, centers can generally transition to guard with no problem. Guards can't necessarily play center. Easton falls into the former category.

Saints plan to play former Vikings’ guard Nick Easton at center, per source, filling the hole that Max Unger’s retirement created. Easton has started at center in the past.

Appears to have a similar profile to Unger. Smart guy, better pass blocker than run blocker. Keep that interior pocket fresh

Dude is coming off a neck/spine injury. After the Meredith shite last year Im skeptical on our med evals but we will see. If healthy he should be fine

Tom will be the starting center. The Saints signed Easton for when they make a draft day trade of Peat and the 2nd round pick to move up and grab another corner back
