We have 3 starting-caliber CBs on the roster already. We should not trade Peat for a DB, especially a rookie

They did. That doesn't mean that Unger made his decision right before the news came out. He could have told them that he was retiring a week ago, and they asked him to hold off on the announcement so as to help them in FA negotiations.

So he told them a week ago and they still didn't bring in any of the top centers??

I doubt they knew. Unger wanted that bonus. He collected and quit on us. I get it’s business but it’s bullshite.

He won't be able to keep it.

Okay, there are actually two "buts" for retirements. When a player retires, the team has the option to pursue the return of a portion of the signing bonus equal to the unplayed portions of the contract, and that money is no longer counted against the salary cap. This is typically done through an arbitrator. This is known as the "Barry Sanders Rule" because this is exactly how the situation played out in his case, as he was required to pay back a portion of his bonus. The difference between now and then is there was no precedent when Sanders played; now, it's explicitly written into the CBA to allow for this arbitration.

You can verify the "Barry Sanders Rule" in other places, including askthecommish.com.

ETA: It's why his retirement has freed up ~$6.5m even though he was only a ~$5.8m cap hit this season. His retirement not only freed up his cap hit this season, but some guaranteed money next season.

Unger's decision hurt us in terms of talent, but he's not sneaking out with money that he didn't earn or play for. He could have pulled a Kreutz and showed up ~20lbs underweight in the preseason, gotten cut, and come out with ~$4m extra. His decision sucks, but it was honorable.

Yeah they didn't sign this guy to 4/24 to back Peat up. He's clearly the new C.

I haven't seen any indication that this dude was worth a shite before being injured, much less after missing a significant amount of time.

From PFF heading into last year:
Ranking all 32 offensive lines by pass-blocking efficiency - JUN 18, 2018
quote:

1. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
2017 pass-blocking efficiency: 84.6
Best individual PBE: Max Unger, 98.0

quote:

13. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
2017 pass-blocking efficiency: 79.3
Best individual PBE: Nick Easton, 97.8

quote:

The Vikings offensive line was far from stable throughout the 2017 season and that lack of continuity took its toll on the passing game. The team ended the campaign with 154 pressures allowed on 572 passing plays, but it easily could have been more without the help of quarterback Case Keenum escaping sacks at an incredible rate. The bright spot on the line was guard Nick Easton, who allowed just three hits and nine hurries on his 401 pass-block snaps and finished one of just five guards to play more than 400 pass-block snaps without allowing a sack. With so much invested in new quarterback Kirk Cousins, the offensive line will need to improve their play heading into the new league year.

Here is a bit more from 2017 (includes gifs). Seems to confirm good pass blocker but weak run blocker.

We'll see. I can't wait to see the contract details.

Reading comments from viqueens fans and most of them say we overpaid due to injury concerns. Saints know OL like the back of their hands so I'm not worried.

Good grief, I hope the contract gives the Saints an out after the first year. Otherwise, this is the latest Mickey Loomis future dead money signing. Absolutely reactionary and completely abysmal. A bad player coming off a horrible injury history signed to a big money deal. The Saints front office does so well most of the time but they always seem to make one or two bone headed decisions that haunt them for years.

I’ll wait to see the actual guaranteed money before I pass judgement on this deal. On its face it looks like an overpay for a guy with only one season of starting experience (mostly at LG, not C) who is coming off a season ending injury. I’ve heard he is a little weak at the point of attack and not a stein run blocker but is also a good pass blocker which is more important in our offense. He will play between two very strong guards in the run game in Warford and Peat so his run blocking shouldn’t be a big issue. He just has to keep guys out of Brees’ face so he can step up in the pocket to throw. On the right side he’s obviously a smart guy who went to Harvard and is very athletic for a lineman. He’s also under 6’3” which is important so Drew can see over him easier than a taller center. I’d be shocked if they gave him more than $8 million guaranteed so if it blows up in their faces they can walk away after one year without too much of a cap hit. On the other side if Easton turns out to be a real asset then all of a sudden that 4 year $24 mil deal that seemed like an overpay turns into a bargain. If he ends up proving himself then that gives the Saints the option to move on from Peat after the year and either draft a new LG or slide Easton over and have Tom or Clapp play center which saves you tons of money versus giving Peat a new contract. All in all this seems like a pretty sound risk/reward move by the front office. Some may say they panicked and overpaid instead of looking at other options that would be cheaper but I applaud them for targeting the guy they wanted and did what they needed to get him on board. In an offseasonwhere Trent Brown got $66 million and Ja’Waun James got $52 mil I can live with this deal. Now hopefully Easton won’t count more than $3 mil against the cap this year so they can go get Jared Cook.

Brown and james are tackles
This is probably going to break down to a 2 year deal

They had to overpay because 2 other teams wanted him and Unger s retirement put them in a hole

Signing could give us flexibility with Peat’s Long term future still in limbo here. Could kick out to LG if we find another C replacement. (Draft) without having to start a rookie

Damn dude. We go through this every year. You might right & you might be wrong. For your sake...hopefully you're right, b/c a lot of people are going to bookmark this thread.

Give the guy a chance, b/c we've hit on far inferior free agents before.

That's fine, it's just my opinion. Actually, I hope I'm wrong and Easton has a Hall of Fame career for the Saints.

Looks like similar numbers to the contract Unger just finished up. His was $4.5, $8, $5.5 & $6.5. May have just restructured the deal for Easton.
