ESPN

Replacements will be on the field beginning next Wednesday night when the Cowboys visit the Giants to open the season, league executive Ray Anderson told the 32 teams. Negotiations are at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union,

The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement went nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.

Calling it as the understatement of the year.

I wonder if the NFL has taken any steps in helping these guys actually get better? If we are going to be stuck with them, they might want to learn what pass interference is or isn't.

To be fair, they've gotten better as the preseason has progressed.

Player safety and protecting the integrity of the the game. Those are the two things Goodell always spouts off when asked about his heavy handed tactics. Those are also the two things that will be undermined by using these replacement refs. This is an absolute disgrace. Goodell is an incredibly petty man. They're saving pennies here and spitting in the faces of the fans and players.

Theyve gotten infinitely better since the first preseason game...but that's not saying a ton. They still throw pass interference flags like they're trying to make it rain. If it were false starts or something fine, but PI is the biggest penalty there is

Hey guys!!! I care so much about player safety that I'm gonna put officials on the field who have no clue what the rules are or how to enforce them!! Arm tackle? 15 yards. Missle launch to QB head? I didn't see nuthin'

Goodell looks worse with each decision he makes

Something tells me Goodell and the NFL will be finding a solution after week 1 when CBS and FOX are pissed that games are going 3 1/2 - 4 hours long (when the regular NFL refs have always been good at keep a good 3 hour pace to the games) and all their advertising revenue gets screwed up. Nevermind teams that play an afternoon games, their fans are going to be livid when they don't get to see the start of their game so they can see the finish of the earlier game that they care nothing about.

Not watching the game, but saw these two tweets from Clayton:

quote:

Some of the delays by replacement officials for spotting the ball and figuring out double foul calls has been embarrassing tonight.

quote:

The delay in the Tampa Bay game was crazy. They had to look at replay twice to figure out the spot

Seriously. This can't go on all season.

Yes they have but from where they were to where they are now is still woefully inadequate
