It's good times and things are looking great. In the midst of a win streak Fleener still has not emerged as a playmaker. His reputation was "soft" and he has not disproved that. A go-to TE that cannot thrive with Brees ain't gonna thrive.

Underwhelming 2017
13 catches 151yds 11.6ypc 2 TD

His contract

I don't think you could get anyone to take him at all with $6+ million base salary kicking in. Is $4.8mil next year the total cap hit/cost for 2018?

I'm the kind of person who believes that where there's smoke, there's fire. If we don't do a trade for Graham, I fully believe we bring him back in the off-season or at least make an attempt to.

Fleener is what this offense needs to be balanced. He and Hill are playing at a high level, just not being asked to do a ton in the passing game.

Jimmy Graham is the ONLY tight end drafted since SP has been here.

Fun fact.

I wonder when the last TE not JG was drafted. I bet it's been 15 years.

Makes you wonder how much of that has to do with the team intentionally keeping TEs at the line to help with pass blocking since we have a rookie on one side and Armstead was out on the other.

Fleener doesn't need to get many catches, he just needs to make his blocks and not drop it when it is thrown to him. His salary is high for that, but unless my memory is wrong, he seems to be doing a good job of blocking and not dropping passes this season.

I think he has been asked to do more but hasn't answered- so then the role is reduced.

I know he is a big strider but he looks slow as shite for a more of a receiving type TE too.

He's a better and more reliable receiver than hill, but Fleener and hill split snaps evenly and both block a lot. Maybe asking him to only produce 500-600 a year is smart

While he is doing well in his role, iirc he is last in snaps (or just in front of Hill) for TEs. Hooman is outsnapping both of them.

Next year he will cost $8 mil to keep or $4.8 mil to cut (we save $3.2 mil to cut him).

Not sure you can pay your second or third TE $8 mil. I see us asking him to take a paycut or cutting him if he refuses.

But if he does manage to stick around next year he definitely won't be around in 2019 (unless he has some insane turnaround). We'd save $5.8 mil cutting him that year.

I'm not saying I don't believe this but I thought the deal was pretty much done with guarantees after a couple years. Maybe I had that wrong and it was 3...

Buu Williams was a WR out of FSU but converted nicely into a TE.

Not sure if he counts.

He had an $8 mil signing bonus spread over 5 years. While he is cuttable after this year, it isn't without a good dead money hit.

2016- $8 mil
2017- $6.4 mil
2018- $4.8 mil
2019- $3.2 mil
2020- $1.6 mil
