Thanks. It's looking more like the BJ Gary Cavaletto from Santa Barbara CA overruled the SJ. Has anyone checked this guy out? This is smellier than a ice chest full of 3 day old ripe shrimp....

When a pass is intended for a receiver on the sideline, typically one official takes ball and the other takes feet. That way they can get together and confirm "did you have a catch?" "Yes", "Did you get feet in?" "Yes" = Catch Or, both officials take ball and immediately look to the feet once they have a catch. It's a difference in opinion on mechanics and different officials prefer one over the other.

Is that what you were asking?

Exactly. It is also my understanding that they keep the play between them so at least one of them will see the ball so they will not be shielded by the players body in order to see possession...
Also knowing one could have his vision blocked by another player, sideline folks, fall down etc.

I believe most sports officials would appreciate a mechanism that would correct their blown calls/non calls, especially those in championships. It’s gotta be difficult for them as well.

I lost faith in refs when Tim Donahue exposed corruption and the NBA acted like he was a rogue agent when it's clear others are influenced.

Anything reasonably close, it's fine, rational people understands. That's the way it goes. However the fact that something so blatant can occur in a game to send a team to the Super Bowl. However now that we know just how much "human error" can influence such a great deal there has to be a fail safe instituted.

Again, it wasn't just one no-call. This one was just as obvious.

Throw the flag in a big game like this and pick it up if all are in agreement. Not throwing it was pathetic on their part.

Agree 100%. That was the first blown call. Same thing, no excuse. That's pretty textbook.

Thanks for the great post. Please post more.

Do you think refs intentionally try to avoid making “game changing” calls in big games like this? This is the “let them play” theory.

And maybe they just took it too far?

The reason I ask is because the alternative explanation for it is far more nefarious.

I only have a second before I have to leave to pick up my kids. I'll get back on later and respond fully, but the short answer is it depends on the official. Some try way too hard to stay out of a game. Some want to throw their flag way too much. You have to find a middle ground and only throw the big, game affecting calls. That is obviously what that was.

I'm all for letting them play, to a certain extent. What we saw yesterday was cowardice.
