SP implies it is why he left.

quote:

A study of penalties committed against each team in the prior four seasons showed that the Saints ranked 30th, 31st, 32nd, and 32nd in penalties called against their opponents. If it’s happenstance, it’s an extreme statistical rarity.

quote:

Payton’s not-so-subtle message was and is that the league’s bias against the Saints showed itself in the penalties not called against its opponents.

So what happened when the Saints presented their findings to the league office? Payton says there was no response.

And Payton’s suspicion went to the top of the ladder. “I think it starts with [Commissioner] Roger [Goodell],” Payton said.

quote:

I got tired,” Payton told Wickersham. “There was a feeling, I would say on my part, of losing the jump balls in this game. You know? Success or lack of success with the Saints is a blip on the NFL.”

Nice to be justified in bitching about the refs all these years.

30th, 31st, 32nd, 32nd. Doesn’t take a genius to realize how bizarre that is, but there will no doubt still be smart asses that don’t understand how insane that statistic is.

Or maybe it was just a warning shot. A message to the league office and the officials that if the trend from Payton’s last four years with the Saints carries over to the Broncos, Payton will call it out.

Where do we find these rankings and know if those were for 2019-2022 or 2018-2021. If the later, I wonder where we can find 2022's numbers? Maybe the league's ire will finally leave the Saints alone and will follow Payton

It could be that they have it in for Payton too. I wouldn't expect Denver to get any breaks with the calls this year.

Sure did seem like we had a few phantom calls against us in that Vikings game over in London last year.

Or I'm just misremembering.

NFL Team Stats
teamrankings

Click the bottom icon labeled penalties.

Another interesting stat during CSP time as coach was total penalties by first down each game. The Saints opponents would typically get more first downs by penalty against the Saints than their typical per game average.

This skewed anomaly became exaggerated after CSP complained about the no call.

If you look up box scores on previous Saints games since the no call, you'll see some games for instance against the Falcons where there were double digit first downs by penalty for Atlanta.

He got no sympathy here in NO and he knew it because of bounty gate. The article suggests that his airing it out is a counter measure. Now that it's documented, he's basically weaponized sports media in his favor. If the league keeps fricking with him in Denver, it will be a continuous story throughout his tenure there and the NFL can't have a commissioner that has public wars with coaches.

Tyrann “hands to the face” alone should have gotten someone disciplined or fired. But they have no accountability.

That 2018 Vikings playoff game had some phantom PI calls for sure that led to quick scores in the 1st half. Which is what led to Marcus Williams whiffing that tackle because they were scared the refs were gonna call a PI and screw them. Then the following year they actually did.

I bet dollars to dimes the saints return to better than average and the broncos are about to get fricked.

The league didn’t have it out for the saints. They have it out for Sean.

Well I will say this probably falls under the old mantra that "you could call holding on every play".

I will say this....Do I believe that the refs watched everything like a Hawk and through the flag just about every chance against the Saints...Sure I do..

Do I think that they called stuff that want's there?

No....

I have to say that in watching the replays the Saints frequently had hands to the face and PI especially on 3rd down.

This is one of those things that should be a much bigger story than it really is

It’s a fricking shame and a huge part of the reason I fell out of love with the nfl

Roger Goodell - “I can’t believe Sean Payton would fire off this kind of statement. The Saints will pay for this.”

I’m sure saints are in trouble for bringing Gruden in as well

If this is why, it’s ridiculous. There wasn’t a team out there that didn’t have some pay/bounty for big hit player or coach led program. The NFL needed a sacrificial lamb to hammer to try to act like they gave a damn about player safety in the midst of the concussion lawsuit they were facing. To act like the Saints were overly different than any other team is patently absurd.
