There’s a reason GM’s are hesitant to apply the tag. It made no sense. What would that one year have gotten us? He would have been gone the next year.

Wrong. Pass rushers always get trade value in the NFL. At worse if he repeats the same season, and Davenport does Davenport things like stay injured, you ship him out for the cap relief and extend Hendrickson.

You’re saying there was a market to pick up Davenport’s contract at that point in time?

Bookends of Hendrickson and Granderson would have been awesome.

He was still on a rookie contract. He just got paid 13 million for one year after being injured and doing jack shite last year. You tell me.

I find more enjoyment from a Bengals game now because of Joe, Chase & Trey Hendrickson.
Every time Hencrickson sacks a QB I'm thinking, who let that guy go? But no, we kept the guy who made some stides but never really materialized.

I don’t understand why the morons on this board cannot get it through their thick skulls. We COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY HIM WHAT HE WAS WORTH!!! Anyone with half a fricking brain knew that we had no chance. My 13 year old knew that his last game that season was his last game as a Saint. And he understood why. You frickers are straight up tards.

But we always hear about Loomising and how we can sign any player we want.

We should always keep the great players and get rid of the bad ones.

We’ve hit and we’ve missed as far as finding FAs and keeping draft picks.

Hits: Lattimore, Kamara, D. Davis, Cam, Ram
Misses: TRex, Peat, Vonn Bell, Peat, CJGJ, Peat, Peat

IIRC, we had already picked up the 5th year option the previous off season. Which means anyone who got him was investing in a 2 year commitment. Yes, he just got paid $13, but on a one year deal

I understand that they could not afford him because of the cap, but man I wish there was a way that they could kept him. Dude really came into his own in his final season with the Saints, he's part of that new breed of White guys at DE that are a force at pass rushing QBs, imo. Him and the Aidan Hutchinson kid with Detroit, the Bosa brothers, and Watt brothers, well, there's just 1 Watt left now I think and so on. (they're probably others out there that I just can't think of right now)

Defi could have should have franchised him

If you were going to franchise him, it would have better to just keep him. His cap hit since leaving the saints was $12.5M in 2021, $14.5M in 2022, $15M in 2023. Will be $20.2M in 2024 & $18.7M in 2025.

I believe the franchise tag would have been around $16M that year. Mickey makes him a similar offer to Cincy, you know he manipulates the shite out of those cap numbers to make it work.

Who is trading for a DE does things "like stay injured"? He had ZERO trade value.

Hendrickson’s first 3 years were downright Davenportesque. Kinda hard to gamble that his one good (contract) year wasn’t a fluke when we had cap issues. You can’t keep everyone.

If I remember right he wasn't a run defender for us much but used more as a 3rd down rusher and that was another reason we didn't invest in him.

If they hadn’t resigned Michael Thomas and Peat, they could have afforded to keep Hendrickson. I was blasted on here for saying we shouldn’t resign MT because WR’s rarely produce on a second contract, but here we are.
