Cam would start over Clowney or they'd likely be on the field at the same time in passing situations

I agree with the rest of your post though

I should have used Brees as an example instead of Cam. There are multiple teams that would keep their QB over Brees. Doesn't mean that he is a bad QB. He's still really good but GB or NE wouldn't start Brees over Rodgers or Brady. So to the previous poster saying that our guys wouldn't start for ALL 32 teams is kind of silly.

Why was this guy cut?

Cleveland fully intends to suck this year.

Kruger had a bad contract for a team that was going nowhere.

Why was this guy cut? It looks like he is a very good player that had an average year last year. Was there some specific circumstance here?

new coaching staff that wants to go younger apparently. Saved them $5+ million for a guy that was having to play out of position.

"It was a shock," cornerback Joe Haden said. "But this business, I'm telling you, never surprises you. You always have one or two every year that you kind of scratch your head on. That's a dude that you thought was going to be a part of the change. It's a business. It's a tough business."

They've been getting rid of their bigger contracts. Our gain

Apparently he is a great teammate

Payton pointed out McCain, who is listed at 6-5, 236 pounds, can contribute on special teams and resembles the 6-5, 246-pound defensive lineman Obum Gwacham in build.

And I was never sold on Gwacham playing end (and still a 10 lbs. difference).

Imo Gwacham, Tull, and this guy are likely fighting for the final DE spot if we keep 5, or a PS spot.

I like the signing but cruising a few Brown's boards and they hate this dude.

Say he's slow has no moves, just a bullrush that gets stonewalled 90 percent of the time.

We'll see. Fans usually dismiss players their team's release and rarely are impartial.

I also think the Browns are more 76ers than some quant geniuses so there's that too.

I'd say it's a good signing with relatively low risk. At a minimum he should be better than what we had but I'm not expecting double digit sacks. He just has to be decent.

And because we are signing him off waivers we don't have to pay him a ton right? Any details on his contract?

Tapp is the only dlineman who's provided any pass rush this pre-season (excluding the first game). If he plays well this week, he's making the roster.

Something to keep in mind also when looking at how money gets guaranteed, he may not make the "final" 53 week one, but would be resigned week 2 when his salary wouldn't be guaranteed.

They'll possibly keep a young guy instead week 1 so the cheaper salary is guaranteed and then pay Tapp week to week.

This is what we did with Meach a couple of years ago.

No waivers. He's a vested veteran (played enough years) so his contract was terminated and he hit FA.

No idea what he got but my guess is minimum or thereabouts.

He didn't go thru waivers. Only players with less that 4 years experience go thru waivers

Also if you pick a player off waivers, you pick up his contract as is as well.

Meh the hope is he has a little left in the tank and can have an impact on a close game or 2 like Freeny did for Arizona last year. Experience can go a long way to make a timely sack or stop in a big moment.

This is dumb statement. Cam wouldn't start over Clowney or Watt for Houston so your statement has now been proven false. Besides, building a defense is not about having 11 all pro defenders, although that helps. It's about running a scheme that your players can execute effectively.

I'm not trying to start a stupid semantics war here, but I didn't say anything about needing 11 all pro defenders. My point is that our current defense is filled with guys who are far from sure bet starters for many other teams. You don't need 11 all pro guys. But you generally need a lot of talented players. I think we have upgraded this somewhat this year and the defense is young with potential to improve. But to suggest that we can be "special" this year (which is what I was responding to) is wildly speculative at this point. I hope it's true. But there just isn't any real evidence of it right now.

Any Cam Jordan would be a major contributor/starter with every team, even the Texans (though this really isn't the point and you know it).

He's only 30. It's not like he's a running back. He's got a few years left. Article on Pass Rushers at 30 or Later
