ESPN Article

quote:

"There's only a few people in this league that actually follow up with you when you ask them a question, when you reach out to them," said Winston, who said he also got the chance to spend time with Brees at the Rock Church in San Diego before being drafted No. 1 overall in 2015. "And ever since then, he's always been a guy that I can hit up during the season and ask a question, and he'll get back with me.

quote:

"When you have an opportunity to work with a coach who is as successful and as smart as Sean Payton and work with a quarterback who will be, whenever he decides to retire, he's probably getting escorted to the Hall of Fame, I don't think you really can beat that. Especially if you believe in yourself," Winston said. "If you believe in the ability that you have, really if you have faith that you will become a starting quarterback again, you take this opportunity in a heartbeat, to work with this amazing group of men. "Being a quarterback, you have to be a student of the game. So now I actually get a chance to dive into that more, and I actually have a Hall of Fame quarterback that I'm learning from, as opposed to trying to learn by myself or use Google."

What does that say about Bruce Ariens that he has to learn quarterbacking on youtube.

I mean, you really couldn't script a better answer from Winston.

Lets goooooo! Jameis is kinda making me like him after I couldnt stand him for years. Maybe he learns the position from 2 of the best (Payton and Brees) and we are set for another 10 years!

It seemed pretty obvious all of last year that Arians had no desire/ intention of keeping Winston around. Probably no point in coaching him up if you’re forward thinking to how you’re going to run your franchise otherwise. That, or it didn’t take long for Bruce to figure out he wasn’t worth the effort.

I gotta be honest. That sounded a lot like a grown up speaking. Probably just my imagination.

He’s not dumb like the media portrays him.

Im sure y’all want to buy in he’s another dumb black kid. Unfortunately he’s not.

Well there is a thread with some damning stats that says Arians isn't necessarily a good coach, even if his scheme is good.

When you let 5 out of 6 qbs you've worked with throw their career high in ints in your first year working with them, it says you're more busy worrying about your play book than your players.

Too much scheming, probably not any coaching. Especially is Winston is straight up saying he's having to ask people outside the organization or google because the coaching stuff obviously sucks at teaching.

Yeah there's a difference between being an idiot (which he isn't) and acting like one (which he has plenty).

Hopefully his days of acting like an idiot are over. If not we'll just move on. He definitely has the talent, seems to have the want to, and is smart enough to get there. Just cut out the stupid shite.

Well, I believe the most important thing he can and will learn here in NOLA with CSP and DB is how to be a professional athlete. He'll learn that or this is going to be a short stop for him. CSP has proven time and time again he's not afraid of looking bad by cutting or trading distractions. When Winston learns how to be a professional it will really open up his football learning ability.

From his interviews it sounds like he's totally embraced that challenge.

Just to add, I think he's shown how smart he is, and perhaps how he is maturing, by passing on short term money where he might flame out and be out of the league in 1-3 years and instead is choosing to work on his long term prospects to give him a legit shot at 10-15 more years.

Black or white if you make goofy decisions you get tagged. He hasn't exactly helped his image.

As the leader of a franchise you have to be mature. I believe in 2nd chances, but let's not play the poor Winston act. He is a multi-millionaire athlete that made some poor decisions.

I hope the best for him, because I like the Saints and I'm glad he has an opportunity to repair his immature label.

I haven't hated Jameis since his freshman year in college. Dude is goofy as hell and has provided some hilarious moments for the past 7 years in college and the NFL. I always had a soft spot for his hilarious arse

I thought Jameis was a clown coming out of college and thought Tampa was crazy for picking him over Mariotta. But he has obviously grown up. I know there was an enormous difference in me from when I was 21 to 26. He has obviously seen how quickly your Pro Bowl career can end in this business and he is taking an enormous step to extend his career.

Zach Streif said it best yesterday. Everybody can say "This person should take less money to go win." But it is HARD to turn down millions of dollars. It is a choice that I reckon no one on this board will ever have to deal with. If I were in his shoes, I would go the Mark Burnell route and just keep taking whatever money I could as long as I could....ha

He showed immaturity for sure, and I think that puts some things in perspective about handing a 21/22 year old millions of dollars, spotlight & criticism, and the keys to being the face of billion dollar business team. This is not a "woe is Jamies" post, but we all know the high profile athletes often get special treatments in college and are surrounded by "yes men" and if they don't get the right surrounding in the NFL it's tough for them to adapt to being a professional and not just relying on physical talent. Plenty players and QBs have made the transition seamlessly, but plenty have failed, and I think that goes to show why some teams invest and think so highly of having those veteran backups on the roster to pair with the young QBs. Jamies probably needed more oversight than most, but probably got less than most in TB

Yeh, because Johnny Manziel (who is white, BTW) hasn't been ripped for his off the field character??

His "eat a W" thing last year made himself look pretty stupid. I'm not sure the media altered that to portray him as dumb.

Oh, and the uber driver, and him yelling in the Quad at Florida St and the crab legs, etc, etc. Yep all media portrayal.

If Drew Brees can make Jameis a pro, then just make him the damn Mayor of New Orleans. I don’t care about his politics. He could literally run an add that showed his Super Bowl ring and say “I’m Drew Brees. I fixed Jameis Winston. I can fix New Orleans. I’m running for Mayor.”
