It was a 6 year deal. He is on the books through 2018.

Yes, but I believe the cap savings would outweigh the dead money if cut after this season. It's likely this is his last year per the cap gurus

Byrd's cap hit is 11.7mil next year.

Cutting him saves 3.7 while leaving 8mil of dead space

Designating him as a June 1 cut would save 8.3mil while giving you 3.4mil in dead space.

Issue with that is in 2018 you'd be on the hook for 4.6mil of dead money if you June 1 cut him.

Realistically, the savings isn't worth it unless he's injured again, plays THAT poorly, or someone really takes the leap. Still have to remember that Vaccaro is an in the box safety so you still need at least two traditional safeties that can cover and is a sure tackler.

Byrd is going to play well enough this year, now that he is healthy, to make everyone forget about wanting to cut him.

I am starting to detect some extreme optimism in your posts.

Or extraordinary levels of methamphetamine...

Either way, carry on.

Good grief...I guess we are stuck with mediocre safety play the next 3 seasons...
Decent backup at best- what a bust, and I really wanted to believe he could bounce back to his old Buffalo self...

I'm expecting Byrd to improve significantly this year with Dennis Allen as the DC

and by 'significantly' I mean I hope to actually notice him on the field this year

Byrd will be better if we have a pass rush which I think we will now

Either way I believe this is his last year. We drafted his replacement in Bell.

So why would you not cut him June 1 next year. Obviously, you could get someone of a high caliber or 2 people for 8.7 million. Or am i missing something?

the benefits only come in after june 1, not in march so the money is useless by that time (outside of signing small names, rookies, or your own). Same thing with Browner's money this year, we used it on other things, not Fleener, Robertson, Fairley etc.
