Is Sean Payton really a good play caller or not?

watching the Saints offense (even with Drew) always seemed plain/ vanilla even when we were spinning the score boards. Almost all the Saints games lost for years are games where the Saints offense stalls and does not run the clock to prevent the other team from beating us with those last scores. Does anyone else see complex motion / passing patterns and different back field line ups to confuse the defense on other NFL teams YET never from the Saints offense?

He is the best in the business at playing to his players strengths. Unlike a coach like Arians who just runs his system regardless of fit

An undisciplined coach with very poor game plans and poor play calling like CSP typically achieve this:

2020 12-4

2019 13-3

2018 13-3

2017 11-5

The Saints have won four consecutive division titles.

Arians is no coach compared to Payton. I think he is the best in putting the right players together on a team and getting the most out of them. He is also smart and will send the ones packing who he can not work with. Just feel his play calling is predictable a lot of times.

He is the best coach in all time Saints history. Not even debatable. But true the Saints offense has struggles since we slowly lost great receivers and Drew. So am I wrong about the play calling or is it that we don't have players to produce anymore? I think some of both.

The actual offense is not complicated. It's a West Coast philosophy, but tailored to the player's talents. Ealry on in NOLA, you saw the WCO concepts, but with agressive, vertical routes. When the Saints moved on from Devery, Meachem, etc and Brees' arm started loosing velocity, they evolved to focus more on timing plays and minimizing turnovers by not taking as many risks. Now with the talent at OL and RB, Sean emphasizes the run game a lot more. It's all in how he calls plays, moves players, etc to create matchups against specific defenders who are unable to successfully defend specific Saints players is what makes him the best play-caller in the NFL for 15 years.

I know we have all been disappointed with the passing game, but I feel that Sean is bringing Jameis along at a deliberate pace. Brees isn't really get aggressive his forst year until about halfway through the season. You see Brady last year and he didn't really hit a groove until later in the season. I think at some point this year, Sean will feel confident enough in Jameis that they will be more aggressive, too.

I don't think we are running the ball worth a crap this year.

Thread is a joke. What makes sean one of the best is his ability to adapt scheme to his players. Also, you dont see a bunch of exotic stuff in the run game because he likes his players to practice the same type of plays over and over to master those. He’d rather they master 10 plays than to be okay at running 30 different ones

Under Sean Payton, the Saints use more varieties of personnel packages than other NFL teams. Payton has been one of the best, if not the best at putting pressure on opposing defenses over the years by giving them so much information to have to prepare for.

The Saints can have one formation with a specific personnel grouping & run 5-6 different plays out of that one formation.

Kamara draw play on 3rd and 10 for the first down on Monday.

90% of play callers are asking Jameis to throw that ball.

Payton's offensive schemes + Drew Brees helped the team to turn terrible receivers into serviceable pieces, which allowed Loomis to spend money elsewhere.

As soon as some of these guys left (Meachem, Snead, Stills, etc.), they reveal themselves as the turds they really are

Now with a QB who is not a first-ballot hall of famer, it's not as easy to make chicken salad with the receiver corps

This was always going to be the endgame once Brees left. We kicked the salary cap can down the road so many times and now we have to finally pay the bill. The only way we're going to substantially increase the skill positions is if we can convince some disgruntled veterans to sign here for pennies to chase a ring (ex. Antonio Brown, Gronk, Fournette, etc.)

And he is the first HC in the history of the NFC South to accomplish this achievement.

Sean’s biggest flaw his whole tenure was not getting rid of BBQ buddies like Vitt who were dragging the defense down in historical ways during the prime of his HOF QB’s career.

He may be the GOAT offensive play caller/personnel developer though

You're a seriously spoiled fan if you don't think Sean is a good coach. Almost every team in the NFL would kill for him as HC and the results he has had during his time here.
