He never did try and find a Brees successor and with all we know now; he was looking to get away.
I'll never be ungrateful for what he did, but it would it be ignorant to see that somewhere along the line he said, "frick it, I'm out." Knowing what we know now.

If he gets an elite QB prospect he won’t give that up. If he thinks Williams can be a top 5-10 QB he will stay.

It's almost impossible to win anything in the NFL without a good QB. That's one of the main reasons why Saban left Miami, otherwise he would have done well with time. Imagine if Brees passed his physical (or if they gambled like Loomis did and fudged it) and ended up there.
Payton likely would have struggled here for a few years and went to New England or something.
