If you’re drafting for an impact player in year 1, the safest position for us is LB

Quarantine research!

Which Positions Are the Safest, Riskiest at the Top of the NFL Draft?
quote:

Safest first-round picks: Safety, linebacker, interior offensive line
At safety, you're three times more likely to draft a Pro Bowler than a bust in the first round. And only the interior offensive line positions have produced All-Pros more frequently.

Riskiest first-round picks: Running back, defensive line, wide receiver
There are more busts than Pro Bowlers coming out of the first round at running back and defensive line, while it's about even for wide receivers.

Biggest tossups in the first round: Quarterback, cornerback
Quarterback is the only position above 40 percent when it comes to producing both Pro Bowlers and busts over the 25-year sample. It remains above 30 percent in both areas in the 10-year sample.

Looking at just the last 3 years of 1st round picks:

Linebackers:
Devin White
Devin Bush
Roquan Smith
Tremaine Edmunds
Leighton Vander Esch
Rashaad Evans
Haasan Reddick
Jarred Davis
TJ Watt
- all but Reddick made significant impact as rookies, though some (Smith, Davis) we’re limited by injury. Several are major-league studs and team leaders.

Wide Receiver
Marquise Brown
N’keal Harry
DJ Moore
Calvin Ridley
Corey Davis
Mike Williams
John Ross
- Harry, Davis, Williams, and Ross were all disappointments as rookies.

Add to this that LB is a need for the Saints, more than WR (at least for 2020), and I remain all in for Murray or Queen at 24.

What’s funny is besides Smith, White and Bush, I thought he had the biggest chance to make an impact of all those guys.

I don’t disagree with your premise though. OL, DL and LBer are usually good bets.

We need to take multiple lb's i think. We need to throw more than one dart at this. Biggest hole and it's not even close anymore. D.davis also isnt a spring chicken, so whether you are talking about this year or for the future....the hole is still lb

So you can take bpa, but if it isnt a lb, we need to make a trade so we can take a lb as bpa.

Not disagreeing with your post, but I'd be intrigued with the interior OL guys. Warford is on the last year of his deal, can save $8M if he's cut.

Peat is now locked in for at least the next 2 years bc of the costs of his new deal & it appears we're set at C.

Agree with this, but also have to account for the natural fluctuations and flows of the draft. These mocks are driven by teams who feed bogus information to Mchsay and Kiper in order to bluff other teams as to who they really like. Would bet my house Derrick Brown, who everyone and their mother has going 7 to Carolina, goes before 7. DET should take him at 3 if they were smart

Mocks are based on need and player that fit such need. Last year everyone was stunned when Ferrell went 4. Truth is we don't know where any player stands on a team's board

I’m just not sure there is IOL value at 24. Maybe if we trade back. Plus, my OP argument is who would help us most now. We’re OK at IOL for 2020.

I wouldn’t cry if we could get Jeudy, Ruggs, Lamb, or JJetts. But... I might have said the same thing about Corey Davis or John Ross. LB still probably the safer pick.

Can't argue that, but ML can work miracles with a extra $8M

I didn’t claim it was realistic, but those or Jefferson are the only WR I’d accept in the 1st round.

Linebacker Aaron Curry was by far regarded as the safest pick in the 2009 draft. He was as safe as there ever was.

He was a bust.

Not disagreeing with you, OP. I just remember all the y’all about how safe of a pick he was.

With E Sanders now in the fold I'd love to add Ruggs to the mix. That combo of receivers would be pretty filthy imo. Totally cool with us taking a LB or a corner though.

I wish I had more confidence that we actually have a season. I read that DJT called upon Goodell to start the season on time. But who knows?

I think Ruggs will be good I just don’t think he will be very effective in our system. He needs to go to a team with a strong arm qb that can just sling it 60 yards and tell him to go get it. That will provide him the cushion to also capitalize on underneath stuff. I just don’t think we will be able to use his skill sets at least until Brees retires.
