in three years, is this draft considered a boom or bust?

Obviously would be disappointed if every other pick flops, but I would also trade an entire draft for a prime Von Miller or Demarcus Ware.

Thoughts?

This is why I said this class reminds me of 2014. Obviously that sounds negative, but what I meant was - most of the guys are really boom-bust type picks. I wouldn't be surprised if all of these guys failed, but I wouldn't be surprised if they all killed it. I don't think they took anyone who is a really safe bet.

To answer your question: I would be kinda sad but obviously an elite DE would be a huge get. The team didn't have any real big needs anyway so I don't think it would cripple the team to miss on all these other picks.

Well Brandon Cooks became a good player but 2014 draft was still a huge fail. Even if Davenport does that but everyone else failed it would be a bad draft, we'd still obviously be happy to have Davenport. You hope to hit around 50% with your draft picks, doesn't mean they have to be elite, but at least starters or key role players.

You can't miss on that many guys and consider it a boom of a draft class. It'd be great Davenport became elite but its semi washed out with compensation given for him.

Can I count Kamara in that draft, since we used the 2nd round pick for him in another draft?

Some think this draft isn't as deep as they originally thought, so it could very well be a poor draft for a lot of teams.

But realistically, I'm setting the goal:
Davenport becoming an 8+ sack player for his career
Smith - no less than a #2WR for his career

I still believe the other 5 guys land as special teams or out of the league. Ideally Jamerson/Scott/Moore can stay with us. OL is a lock trickier to figure out.

So basically a Haslett draft class

Yeah to me that would still be a miss.

You need to hit on 2-3 guys for any draft to be a boom or success IMO.

You hit on 4-5 and it is a walk off grand slam.

If he becomes an elite DE and nobody else is in the league, the draft would not be a success, but not a huge failure. ELite DEs don't come around often.

I thin this draft was pretty different from the ones we have had the past 7 years, we didn't have many immediate holes to fill. We didn't lose many key contributors in the offseason like we did after 2013, we were coming off 2 good-incredible drafts, and we could obviously use some upgrades at positions, but we had a top 5 offense and a top 10-12 defense. We needed to get deeper, and I think getting some quality special teams guys was smart. WE weren't looking at this draft saying we have to get 4 guys who must become starters immediately.

Two O-Line guys was great, the FSU tackle seems like it may have been a reach, but Clapp seems like he could be a great swing interior fill in, and hopefully can develop behind Unger for a couple years and take his spot. 3rd RB was a under the radar need. Jamerson could be a standout special team player, which isn't a sexy, but if we get a versatile playmaker there for a 5th that's a win. Tre'Quan certainly addressed a need, seems like it was a good value from what I have read. CB depth is never enough.

It's pretty unlikely IMO that all these guys will make our 53 man roster this season, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It means we already have good options at most positions. We took some projects, but when you don't have to grab immediate starters you can take some raw guys with more potential over polished guys who seem like they may have ceilings. That's how I see it anyway.

Everyone seems to be hinging the success of this draft solely on Davenport....like the rest of it was clearly poo. I think this draft has the potential to end up being a very good one. 2017 good? probably not, but not many teams have drafts like we did last year. We've got a pretty good roster and could arguably afford to take some chances....Lets see how things play out.

Kiper was talking about how Davenport was a Top 5 pick projection before the Senior Bowl (or whatever). But fell when he didn't show out.

Being so late in the first round, if the Saints wanted an impact player for the next year or two... they had to push their chips in.
Loomis/Payton are going all-in to win before Drew is gone.
If it works out and they get a championship, it'll have been worth it. But, Davenport has to be a stud.

Kiper doesn't know what the frick he's talking about. Many teams were impressed by his senior bowl performance.

He had a rough day one practice but did better each day and very well in the game.

What a lot of people are forgetting is that it is easier to make a bad team then a good team. In 2015, I think every draft pick either made the roster or practice squad and we ended up with 2 full time starters and our slot guy on d.
There is no room for everyone on this roster, we have NFL quality players at every position. They will have to beat someone out. I do think we have the ability to get two starters (DE and WR would be the guess) and possibly a rotational guy both at OLine and in the defensive backfield. It would be a win if we did.
Remember, we are coming off what some even outside of the Saints organization are saying could be one of the best drafts all time...Definitely one of the top two for the Saints.

As much as I was against the cost for Davenport if he becomes an elite D.E. and everyone else washes out I would be good overall just for the value of having an elite D.E.
Big risk big reward. I get why they pulled the trigger, we had a real need but doesn't make it any less risky.

I almost feel like I have to count some percentage of Kamara on last years draft and this year's draft.

If he is a Julius peppers, it is worth a ditka draft trade for one player like that so yes it would be worth it

Elite, such as JJ Watt or Demarcus Ware? If that’s the case, you have to say boom. I think it also depends on how the rest of the draft turns out as well. If Terrell Edmunds, Taven Bryan and Ian Thomas become All Pros, this draft will be looked down upon regardless of what Davenport does.
