re: If Brock Bowers or Rome Odunze are still on the board at 14, do you take one of them?

That's a pretty cool chart, I wonder if they have something like that for teams by 1st round and complete draft.
And everyone don't worry I checked, the Saints are not the ones that took the centers in the first during this time frame
That was 2019 (actually a 2nd rounder) and 2020

A “hit” was defined as a drafted player who signs a second contract with the team that they played their rookie contract on.
Cesar Ruiz would be considered a hit
It's still a consistent and non-biased metric. There's plenty of underwhelming players at all positions that get 2nd contracts.

Looking how the Saints 1st rounders faired in that time frame, they "hit on " 42.9% (3 of 7) of these; although the argument could be the scouting department hit on 5 or 6 of the 7 (depending how you grade Peat)
2013: Vaccaro - 2nd & 3rd contracts signed w/ Tenn - respectable 8 year career
2014: Cooks - Traded to Pats before resigning, but still productive in the league
2015: Peat - Based on qualification, this was a hit
2015: Anthony - No questions this was a bomb (traded 2 years in)
2016: Rankins - 2nd contract w/ NYJ - just signed a $12M per year deal with Cincy and still going strong 9 years in
2017: Lattimore - No questions this was a hit
2017: Ramczyk - No questions this was a hit

Honestly surprised all 5 of these did not make it to their 2nd contract
Eifert - signed 2 1-year deals after 1st contract expired
Ebron - Det picked up 5th year extension, then cut him after 4 years, recall him having decent stats in Det
Howard - TB let his contract lapse after picking up 5th year extension (I thought he was there more than 5 years)
Engram - NYG let his contract lapse after picking up 5th year extension
Njoku - Still going strong in Clev

Right. Which is why it’s no some mic drop finding
There’s always a cliff in every draft from the elite OT or WR or TE to the next tier of guys. The best teams identity this spot in the draft and know when to pivot off a certain position and move to the next, knowing you can get a similarity skilled player at their next pick. There are outliers, guys who over or under perform their draft stock every year. It’s the nature of the beast. At the end of the day you trust the process and the evaluation on the certain player. No two drafts are remotely alike, which is why any “data” or historical references to past drafts doesn’t mean much of anything.

Thought this a little interesting. Besides the specialist what if any position stands out as UDFA that made it. Turns out its not even close. 24% of the snaps by UDFAs were by the undrafted RB group.

Yeah so basically its all a crapshoot and it doesn’t really matter. Whether it’s historical data of past drafts, raw athletic scores, different player rankings, or any other type measuring metric on these players. Instead its subjective to the evaluators you have in house- the same evaluators that picked players recently such as Penning or Foskey and generally recently have had underwhelming drafts. Well good luck Saints.

.. which is why in this specific class you draft the elite WR or TE should that happen to be there. Now you’re catching on

He’s been very successful in Jacksonville.

That actually made me laugh. Really is interesting that you have the drafts the saints have had the past few years and you don’t hear about major changes in the scouting department. Could it be the scouts/evaluators were pushing for some guys that have hit and were overruled by some of the coaches, DA and/or Loomis for these thuds. Or are we just continuing w the head in the sand approach to making staff changes?

No you don’t because if ratings and rankings don’t matter- you just draft best available at your need position. Because again the goal is to plug the major holes on this team.
I really don’t understand this obsession in drafting a WR and TE and plugging one of the best positions in football with some random arse guy off the street and think that we’ll actually be a winning football team.

Who have been some of their picks in prior years?
Would be cool to see, especially the later round guys.

Well, we still need a right tackle

One of the first 2 picks 100% has to be a tackle, but even finding a true starting caliber tackle with one of those picks does not plug all the holes in our offensive line. I’d almost rather keep the 5th’s and try to get lucky with a couple of O-lineman with 2 of those.
If we are going to compete next year, this draft has to be 2017-level good
Eta: I realize there will be serious temptation to go for Brock (if there) or one of the wide receivers (if there) at 14, but without an offensive line how are we going to get them the ball?

Last year they had guys like Rashee Rice, Yaya Diaby, AT Perry on their
Their elite guys have a very high hit rate as well

Strange to say a lot depends on Peat. If he plays he gives us at least another year to work on LT. It seems so far he likes no offers. He may wait till camp and the inevitable injuries to find the job and pay he wants. Hell he could retire. Having to fill three of your five starting oline positions is not a good way to start your year.

A football guy I trust is also huge on Odunze.
Really great post you put together.
I would love either of these two.

Is there? Lets look at some of the top 10 WRs for last year:
Tyreek Hill.......... 5th round
Amon Ra St. Brown.... 4th round
Puka Nacua........... 5th round
Nico Collins......... 3rd round
Very hard to find the Tyreek Hill of offensive linemen in the 5th round. Pretty much impossible.
