I really want Jake Haener to be successful

Here is my perfect scenario:

Derek Carr plays at a top 10-12 QB for the next 3-4 years. Haener develops behind him and we sign Him to a 5-6 year extensions after his rookie deal at a moderate price. Then Haener takes over the starting job and gives us 3-5 years of top 10ish QB play at that moderate price before we have to renegotiate his pay for his 3rd contract. Haener ends up being our QB for 10-12 years and is a top 5 QB in his prime.

Wouldn't that be a nice series of events to come to fruition?

I don't disagree but have 2 counterpoints:

1) If Carr is playing well (top 12 type guy), I don't think you move on from him for an unknown. As I say that, I would love for the saints to bet on themselves and be correct with HAener.

2) if we let Haener start 2 years down the road, we would get 2 cheap years and then have to give him a QB salary. If we keep him on the bench for his entire rookie deal, then resign him to 5-6 years BEFORE he proves he is a starter, then we could get 4-5 years of cheap QB play.

Like I said in my first post, my version of events is a pipedream that most likely won't happen. Reality is that either Carr plays well enough that we try to ride with him for 6-8 years (QBS are playing until they are 40+) and Haener ends up walking in FA at some point along the way. Or Carr sucks and we turn to Haener or someone else within the next 2 years.

Jake Haener is a plug in starter for a team like the Saints right now. I'd not be surprised to see us move on from Carr towards the middle of his deal rather than the end of it.

Jake Haener is a player. Glad everyone is coming around.

Really liked the Haener pick when we took him. Great value in the 4th. Still boggles the mind that we took Ian Book in the same round as him.

No. He may wind up playing some next year due to injuries and turn into the Saints Brock Purdy down the road. But I don’t think they drafted him as the QB of the future in the 4th round. I think their hope for him was to develop into a solid backup for Carr so we can get rid of Jamies next year and just carry 2 QBs. And if something happens to Carr like it did with Drew a couple of times, he can come in for 4-5 games like Teddy and Jamies and prevent the season from tanking before Carr gets back. And he’s supposedly super smart, dedicated, and determined, so hopefully we won’t have to keep an expensive veteran around because we trust him at a young age to keep us afloat if it comes down to it. And he s a team player that will work well with Carr and take a load off him in the weekly prep. Kinda like Chase Daniel. Though he’ll obviously throw more passes than Chase.

I think that was the plan for him and that adds tremendous value. If he does eventually develop into a legit starter, which he could, that’s just lagniappe and he would have exceeded what I think they drafted him for. And I hope he does—that would be huge. But I think we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves thinking we’re gonna move off of Carr after 2 years because Haener’s just that good.

And Victory is even more retarded thinking he could actually be better than Carr already. If he does eventually take over the team, it will be 3,4,5 years down the line. Which would be amazing for s 4th round pick. But he has size limitations that he’s gonna have to figure out how to navigate around like Drew did, and it even took him 4,5 years to master that.

Tl;dr—it’s a bit too early to anoint him as the future franchise QB, and I think expectations should be tempered. But it looks like we may have found a diamond in the rough that could provide infinitely more value than I think their initial plan was for him. And I’m pulling for it to happen because that would be great for the long-term state of the organization. I just think it’s gonna take a few years of development before that potentially—and hopefully—happens.

Only time will tell
The QB position is definitely upgraded with Carr and Haener
Would be ecstatic if Haener can push Carr and be the eventual successor

The Eagles will pluck him from our practice squad.
