I know Jeff Ireland knocked it out of the park last year, but here's his 2015 draft

13th Overall (Round 1) - Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
31st Overall (Round 1) - Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson
44th Overall (Round 2) - Hau'oli Kikaha, OLB, Washington
75th Overall (Round 3) - Garrett Grayson, QB, Colorado State
78th Overall (Round 3) - P.J. Williams, CB. Florida State
148th Overall (Round 5) - Davis Tull, OLB, Tennessee-Chattanooga
154th Overall (Round 5) - Tyeler Davison, DT, Fresno State
167th Overall (Round 5) - Damian Swann, CB, Georgia
230th Overall (Round 7) - Marcus Murphy, RB, Missouri

Stephone Anthony when Malcom Brown and Landon Collins were still on the board. Hauoli Kikaha when Ronald Darby and Eric Kendricks were still on the board. Garrett Grayson, Davis Tull? Wasted picks in rounds 3 & 5.

Sorry sunshine pumpers, but so far this year's draft sucks. I like Davenport, but we seriously overpaid for him, giving up draft capital that we'll need to build the team for the long term post-Drew Brees. Trequan Smith has potential and fills a need but went where he was slotted to go. And Rick Leonard is a major reach.

Ireland was hired in January 2015. He didn’t have much impact on that draft.

Yeah they’ve commented in the past that his input was limited on that draft.

It was his draft. I remember the media talk around that time.

I'm sure you can find it if you look but payton's comments were that because Ireland joined him late, most of the teams scouting had already been completed before he joined the staff. Truth is that regardless of what we think, the quality of this draft won't even be evident until at least a year from now. They have done very well recently so I will continue to believe in them until they give me a reason not to.

Dude, I think all 9 made the team or at least practice squad. Do you understand how the draft works and the chances of that?

Barely had joined the team when we drafted. 2016 he got us:
Rankins
Thomas
Bell
Onyemata

Two straight years of great picks I’ll trust him for now

Teams tend not to cut their draft picks in year 1. So the chances of a draft pick ending up on the roster or the practice squad in year 1 are near 100%

Media and football experts still can’t stop laughing at how they were dumb enough to trade a1st round pick for a DE that (although he has great measurables) most consider a project

Whether it was his draft or not, it’s not an awful draft

Peat- starter, very good
Anthony- bust
Kikaha- rotational player
Grayson- bust, but how many very high QBs are busts?
Williams- rotational player
Tull- no impact
Davison- starter
Swann- was a good player before head
injuries
Murphy- was a solid special teamer, flamed out

"Let’s start with 2015, Ireland’s first year on the staff. Hired during a whirlwind of interviews at that year’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Ireland still had to work with the previous regime’s scouting staff - which had gotten only 8 of its 22 previous draft picks to stick on the Saints’ roster. Ireland also relied on input from Rob Ryan’s defensive coaching staff, including since-ousted names like Joe Vitt and Bill Johnson."

"Bigger changes came in 2016. Ireland was allowed to build his own scouting department, purging it of long-time scouts and adding new eyes. Dennis Allen rejoined the team and slowly began to push Ryan out of the room. The Saints moved towards that year’s draft with a more-focused philosophy than it had used in the previous year, stockpiling draft picks inside the first 100-or-so selections."

Plus we gave them the better of our two 5th round choices.

100%?!? Top round picks almost always make it. Rounds 4 on not so much.

Was he supposed to know that Swann would get a bunch of injuries?
