I hope Shough never skips preseason games again

I hated the decision for them to use joint practices as his preseason games.
The greatest qb we've ever had played preseason games. Shough needs as many reps as possible.
1st half looked like a rusty qb that hadn't played.

Agreed
Don’t care what spin nerds like Underhill put on it

I don’t think it really matters. Fans will try and spin anything though.
What’s the magic number of preseason series that wouldn’t have made him terrible in the 1st half?

There is fairly significant evidence now that it does.

They had three joint practice sessions with other teams that provided more game like situations than what he would have had in a couple of pre-season game series.

He threw for a career high
And the teams had a 2 week break from last preseason

Then your hopes are likely to be dashed. Expect fewer preseason games and eventually none.
Coaches and players prefer controlled scrimmages.
The league (and owners) want more regular season games. The tradeoff with the players' union in the next CBA will be fewer preseason games for more regular season games.

Lol no, no amount or types of practices can simulate a real game. Preseason is the closest you can get.

Show me what you got bunchie
Historically a QB would play 1 series each in the first 2 preseason games, then a few series in the 3rd and sit out the 4th.
Shough played bad for a half because of this? But playing a few series 3 weeks ago would have had him in a groove, huh?

I wish I could find it, but someone posted on twitter about all of the teams that had played their starting QB minimal or no snaps in preseason and most of them were doing poorly in the first half
I only glanced at it and didn't bookmark it. Oh well

Hard to tell if it matters if you start every game like this
Posted on 9/14/26 at 8:51 am to GynoSandberg
That is fair.
I thought about starting a thread on that
Is Kellen Moore just a really bad game planner but very good at making adjustments?
Its enough evidence for that that its not a coincidence

Moore’s early game playcalling is way too conservative

I just think it is impossible to quantify something like that & I would have trouble putting any stock into . Anecdotal at best
Shough “turned” it on when the game flow because negative, which has been pretty common over the last two seasons. Rarely are they playing from ahead. It’s more of a team/talent issue than it is a Shough issue.

You had Brees telling you for years he wanted every rep possible.

team/talent
The team isn’t talented enough for Moore to run a buttoned up, conservative offense for 2-3 quarters every game and try to overpower our opponent for some 14-7 halftime lead. We have 10 games of evidence that Shough is at his best when the offense is aggressive and attacking all over the field. That first half play calling stunk of “I have to get Etienne/Fant/etc going.”
I think yesterday was exacerbated because Shough and the WRs weren’t on the same page and Shough was rattled.

You say that until he gets hurt and we’re fricked

I would love to get a straight answer on his philosophy on this, but he is the least forthcoming coach I have ever seen outside of Bill B, and that is saying something.
I guess he just wants to see how it goes and then open it up later if he needs to. its quite odd

The entire starting offense should be playing some preseason. We had like 5 drops and at least 2 times when the throw and the route were clearly different.
