Grupe will be fine. I get that he's a little salty over being cut. No one would like that. Regardless of whether or not it was warranted.
I would have much rather see him get put on the PS and elevate Smyth for a few games.
Yea the likely hood of Grupe being snatched off the PS was really high, but at least you leave the situation like you did want to give him a chance to work through the issues with your team. Cade York would have been there for the rest of the season on the sidewalk so you didn't have to rush to sign him.
Sometime the optics mean something.

He’s salty because he got cut? How about own up to being the 33rd rated kicker when’s there’s 32 teams. Don’t be mad at the Saints, you didn’t do your job. If you can’t make a 45 yard FG consistently in a dome you deserve to get cut. I’ll take pleasure in seeing him bomb out and laugh at the Colts.
