Free Agent Options Left

Now that the draft is over and UDFAs have been signed, we are at a point in the off-season where mini camps and OTAs begin in preparation for training camp. Coaches, GMs, and pro personnel staff can evaluate any areas that might need to be addressed. There aren't any game changers left in free agency but there are still some reasonably priced role players that can sure up a spot.
Canal Street Chronicles gives a breakdown of three guys that might fit well with the Saints.
DE Dion Jordan
DT Corey Liuget
WR Michael Crabtree
Canal Street Chronicles
Crabtree, for the right price, would be great as red zone threat or a 3rd down target to move the chains.
Not sure if Jordan or Liuget fit Dennis Allen's scheme but having more bodies to rotate in doesn't hurt.
What bargain free agents should the Saints go after?

I like Liuget, but you can keep the other two.

Why do people still think we need a WR? We needed another legit target and we got that with Cook. WR has depth and is not a need. You have 5 guys that are already pretty much locks.
And I'd rather not on Jordan.

None that I can see from the couch.

I just don't see us filling that need on the FA market or even the post-camp cuts market. My dream scenario and only hope would be if the Bengals did a tear down and decided to dump the last year of AJ Green for a mid-round draft pick.

no... has always sucked and never lived up to his draft spot...not even close...

solid, but not better than what we have, especially if Onyemata is not suspended... i like our rotation already, and this would be just adding to add

WR Michael Crabtree
nah... if Dez is healthy, roll with him... if not, see who the June 1st cut will be, and keep an eye on other team's practice squads... his best days are behind him...

You mean when Meredith, Ginn, and Smith were all hurt and somehow we still got more production from a rookie UDFA than anything we got from the TE position in the second half of the season?
TE was the problem spot. WR was just injury riddled (much like Oline). You don't over react to injuries from last year. Yes we could have added someone, but we did and do not need to add anyone.
WR was never a need this offseason. It was a want at best, like most positions with depth. You always want someone better than what you have but that's not NEED.

we do have some cap but I can't wait for these guys to roll off
Dead Money
Name Cap Number
Coby Fleener $3,430,000
Kurt Coleman $3,000,000

quote:Meredith was available because he's got health issues. I like Ginn but he's aging and injury risk is a factor. We still don't know what we have in TQS. Do we really want to be in a position where we're relying on high snap counts from Carr and Kirkwood (and sometimes Arnold in the slot) again? Game after game we saw nobody able to get separation besides Thomas and Ginn.

I disagree that WR wasn't a position of need. I think it absolutely is.

They definitely need a downfield threat, Ginn is aging fast I don't care what he says.

you can add Gerald McCoy to that list
he did say he was open to taking less money to play for a team that regularly goes to the playoffs

I'd take McCoy on a 1 year deal if we get a some kind of discount. Rankins' 5th year option is next year, so I doubt we could afford Rankins, McCoy, Malcom Brown, & re-sign Onyemata next year.
2 year deal for McCoy seems a little unrealistic imo.
McCoy on a 1 year deal & a legit backup OT are the 2 biggest needs for us right now imo.
I know some people want a WR, but I think we're done at that position. We already have 5 probable locks, then 8 other WR's. Seems like a lot of guys to bring in if we're planning on signing a 6th guy that would also be a probable lock. The numbers just don't add up.
Something would have to happen to 1 of our 5 probable locks for us to add another WR imo.

Also, I think we might be fine at DE with the recent signings of Wes Horton, Geneo Grissom, & the 3 udfa's.
Jordan & Davenport are obviously the starters.
We should be able to find 2 more guys out of the following...
Trey Hendrickson
Wes Horton
Geneo Grissom
Carl Granderson
Corbin Kaufusi
Porter Gustin

i dont feel as good about WR as you do
not saying we arent "ok" but i would like to have better talent.
my hopes are they can upgrade the talent and downgrade the cost by having younger guys fill those roles if, and i repeat only if, they are equal or better at getting open and catching balls.
it just feels each and every year we have good receivers who just cant or arent able to get open and or they have butter fingers

I think the coaches are probably banking on 1 of the other 8 WR's stepping up & taking that 6th WR spot. I'm not saying it's the right or wrong move, but that seems to be what the coaches are hoping for based on the current WR depth scenario.
It's very possible that 1 of these guys could do that for us...
Austin Carr
Simmie Cobbs
Travin Dural
Lil'Jordan Humphrey
Deonte Harris - Returner
Emmanuel Butler
Cyril Grayson
Micah Wright
I think we have too many options to make a move right now, but that could easily change if none of these guys step up. Also, if 1 of our top 5 guys gets injured...we might be forced to make a move. jmo.

quality over quantity though
You have Thomas and Trequan right now, Cook at TE.
Meredith is still a question mark with his knee. Missing 2017 and then having to had another clean up procedure last year
Ginn is 34 and had an IR stint with a knee last year. Dude played 5 games last year and injuries/recovery are troublesome at 34
Kirkwood, Carr, Cobbs, Humphreys, Butler are undrafted, break if necessary depth at this point
I dont believe any impartial observer would think this is sufficient. You would like another veteran in the event Ginn or Meredith can't go. It is what it is at this point, there isnt much out there to go and get at the position. I still think they bring a vet in

while im inclined to agree, i think they had chances at some good FA that they should have at least tested the waters on (maybe they did and it went unreported)
i just feel we are always dealing with 2 decent options, a star WR and then an aging vet who is past his prime but serviceable, and then a couple of special team guys who are average at best backup WRs

Think about it: the Saints are at the 4 yard line, goal to go. They have Michael Thomas and Michael Crabtree lined out wide as wide receivers. Taysom Hill is lined up against the line as a tight end. Jared Cook is in the slot. Alvin Kamara is in the backfield, and Drew Brees is in the shotgun. Who are opposing defenses supposed to focus on?

dude did you watch any saints games last year with ginn?
how can you say he is not a deep threat, the dude hasn't lost not one single step.
I would love to take a flyer on Crabtree I think he would be a perfect fit in the saints offense.
Also you can't say we are set at receiver because if trequan never progresses, which I don't think will happen, all u have is Kirkwood.
carr is pooh
