New Orleans Saints

Edge Chase Young (SF)

Well, here we are with the Saints again needing to restructure a bunch of contracts. Yet they always seem to find space for a couple of free agent signings. The biggest need here is pretty obvious, as New Orleans ranked 31st in pass rush win rate and 31st in adjusted sack rate. There are several strong free agent edge rushers, and the Saints need to find one who fits their budget.

The best option might be a one-year, prove-it contract for Young. He couldn't stay healthy in 2021 and 2022, and while he had 7.5 sacks in 2023, his game fell off after he was dealt to San Francisco in the middle of the season. Young ranked 15th among edge rushers with a 19.3% pass rush win rate off the edge, but that went from 24.8% while he was with Washington to just 12.9% with San Francisco (through the playoffs). On a one-year deal with New Orleans, Young could play opposite Cameron Jordan and prove he still has all the talent that made him the No. 2 overall pick in 2020.

Thoughts?

Attitude issues and effort issues. His play falling off when he played for a good team is telling. If SF isn't going to try to re-sign him, it's telling.

Hard pass.

If he is cheap or incentive laden I have no problem. If its a Jamal Williams contract then a hard pass
Almost impossible to get a reasonable contract for a starting FA DE unless there is some issue.

Any money you would waste on signing Chase Young would be better spent elsewhere.

And people thought he was the best prospect in the draft his year. 2020 draft gave us 5(?) starting QBs.

If Carr is the QB, nothing else matters.

You can have 21 All pros and they will win nothing.

Derek Carr has a passer rating of 110.7 with 2,278 yards, 19 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in his last ten games.

Not the biggest Carr fan but he played pretty good down the stretch. Enough to win with a decent defense. Coincidentally, this was also about the time Peat took over at LT….

A 1st round version of Junior Galette. What could go wrong?

He probably cost too much for someone who's not as good a pass rusher as advertised when he came into the pros.

He sucks as a run defender too.

Admittedly I did not watch any games that he played in last season, but I do not ever recall hearing of him being a problem player or lacking motivation, in Washington or SF. I do know his play has not been the same the last couple seasons due to injury though.
What were character issues he had?

San Fran threatened to bench him during the playoffs because of his lack of effort.

Lack of effort in the playoffs during a contract year is pretty concerning. It'd be dumb AF to give him a big contract which means the Saints will probably do it.

I'd prefer Za'Darius Smith

I’d rather pay Daniel Hunter at his age than Young.

These are the most hollow stats I’ve ever seen. Carr was dreadful to start in most games. We’d get down by 3 scores and then he’d pour on some empty calorie yards and TDs in the 4th quarter to have a respectable line but saints still lose

Shall we make a playoff bet?

How did that work out for Proximo?

Glad you have access to Carrs garbage time stats. Dude fricking sucks dick.

I’ll be happy to remind everyone of this conversation again when the saints are 2-7 going into the bye.

Then everyone can have a joint crying session that we extended this dudes AWFUL contract.
