Drew Brees will face free agency and a contract negotiation this coming offseason, but for now the New Orleans Saints quarterback wants to make one thing clear.
He doesn’t want to go anywhere.
“We’re trying to get a little bit better each and every week,” Brees told XTRA 1360 AM. “I feel like we’ve got a great opportunity ahead of us and I don’t plan on leaving New Orleans, ever.”
With the Saints leading the NFC South after winning seven straight games, the 38-year-old says he won’t be focusing on his negotiations at any time this season.
“I’ll handle 2018 when 2018 gets here, but right now I’m in the moment,” Brees said.
“Hopefully, I know all of that stuff takes care of itself when it’s supposed to. I have not approached them about any contract. We just have a great understanding here. Listen, we’re going to go through this season and we’ll revisit it in the offseason. Right now, I’m in the moment.”
So are the Saints, who enjoy a 94 percent chance of making the postseason.

He needs to reduce his salary to $12-15 million, use the rest for WRs, and ride off into the sunset in 3 years with multiple playoff runs and maybe a Super Bowl.

He'll make that money back on the back end in business as a multiple Super Bowl winner. See it as an investment.

I see more of a 2 year contract. First year being 20 million, and second maybe dropping to 18.

Look i love Drew as much as anybody but he really needs to get his accuracy in check. Bradford completed 74.4% this year and is like 8 years younger.

I have it on good authority that Brees will sign for $1 and a 22% ownership deal.

LOL

Happy to hear he wants to stay, pay his last 3 years of this contract I say.

If I recall it's a 5 year but he can bounce the last 3?

Um, isn't he completing 72-73% of his passes? I know you're trolling, but come on Chad.

but, but, but Rapeafart said he was leaving????

He had sources tell him that Brees didn't have new deal, he is missing throws and the Saints are looking for a new QB.

He ain't taking 5/$100 mil unless the last year is a void year.

More realistically I think it'll be a 1-2 year deal between $25-28 mil per but have it extend out 5 years (max allowed bonus spread) like we did last time.

And if structured right, which Loomis knows how to do, next year he could have a cap hit closer to $15 mil as opposed to $30 mil (remembering he already counts for $6 mil).

Since he's going to have a HIGH guaranteed percent you put a big chunk into the signing bonus and spread it.

As for the guy asking about his current deal, it was 5 years to spread the hit, but it auto voids at the start of FA in 2018. We actually need to extend him before then or take on an extra $12 mil in cap.

We were realistically drafting his replacement just a few months ago until the Chiefs traded up. Things that just make you wonder.

44M guaranteed (signing bonus + 2016 salary + 2017 salary)
$24.25M in new guarantees ($19.75M guaranteed on the previous deal)
Voids after 2017 (prior to 2018 league year, $18M dead cap)
No trade clause

Does that mean 18m already on the books for him next year before his contract?

Never happen, and not because he's "greedy" or anything. Brees is very much a player advocate, so taking a well below-market deal only harms his QB peers and their leverage in future negotiations.

Also, his agent has a vested interest in getting him as much as he can get. Just like it's the responsibility of an opponent's defense to stop a team from scoring a bunch of points in a game, it's Loomis and the rest of the front office's responsibility to make a fair offer within the confines of the cap (i.e., it's not Drew's responsibility to "help" in that regard).
