Per Andrew Doak WWLtv

quote:

Drew Brees said he’s ‘not in the mood to make anything secretive’ as far as his future in New Orleans. Said conversations w/ Mickey Loomis, Payton, ownership have been very open and honest. Added he doesn’t plan on his free agent future being dragged out until March.

It is in the Saints best interest to make sure his contract doesn't terminate and accelerate the $18 million cap hit.

I'm honestly surprised with how open he's been about wanting to extend instead of just not commenting on it. I have a feeling they know each other's number at this point and they aren't too far off

He honestly has a ton of leverage. This negotiation feels different without having a franchise tag in the pocket

His biggest issue last offseason was he wanted to make sure this team was going in the right direction. He is moving towards the end of his career, we had 3 7-9 teams in a row, and he was getting hit a lot. With how close we were , and the commitment we have made to the o-line & running gam; I'm sure he really wants to finish his career here now.

5yr/125mil with 65mil in guarantees. 5th year is a voidable year, just added for cap spread.

just get it done and over with.

These talks cannot be very difficult.

How much do you want and how long do you want the contract to be?

We know the number is going to come in around $25 million. We have heard 4 years. We need to be protected against drop off, so I would say do something in this neighborhood.

2018 $23-$25 million
2019 $23-$25 million
2020 $18 million-$25 million
2021 Club Option for same salary as 2020.

I would guarantee $66-$68 million. Basically the first three years.

The 2020 salary would be based on performance levels that can be achieved during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Nothing too extreme maybe like 3000 yards, 65% Completion.

You start at $18 million

$18 million (3000 yards + 65 %)= $1 million
so if you do that in 2018 and 2019
2020 Salary is $20 million
Division title= $1 million
so if you do that in 2018 and 2019
2020 salary is $22 million
Super Bowl either year
$25 million 2020 and 2021.

sweet
just get it done, the less stress after that season ender the better

Feels like this season was an audition and the Organization passed with flying colors. If he's in, let's get it done, 5 million here or there ain't gonna break us. The team is young and cheap.

I know these things generally don't mean much, but it's better when they say the right things than when they don't.

I think Drew sees a YUGE opportunity. Outside of last year, Drew has always been NOLA.

Talks can't and won't drag into open FA. Impossible to go into FA with such a huge unknown hanging out there, IMO.

For the first time i really wish he would take a slight cut. Take 18 instead of 25 with a wink agreement they are going to use the money to upgrade WR and/or TE.

He saw how close we are and he knows how close to the end he is. Load up and go all out for two more years.

I wish he would say, hey, I'll give you a massive cut if you bring Jimmy home.

It'd be nice if he took a little less.

There's no chance he's getting a 5 year deal, even if the last year is voidable. He's 39 years old.

3 year deal with the 4 year being voidable AT MOST.

I really think you guys are freaking out over nothing. We have a young cheap team, the salary cap is not going to be a problem for us over the last 2 or 3 years of Brees' career. Brees doesn't have to take a team friendly deal for us to be competitive in FA.

This is a team a couple pieces away from being dominant

I agree and whether Drew makes 18 or 25, it won't stop us from going out and getting those pieces.

I am by no means a cap guru so this is probably a really dumb question- any chance we see some ‘clever’ base/bonus management like the Pats have been doing recently with Brady?

ETA: Regarding making Brees’ contract more flexible and cap-friendly.
