Suntiger was a bit harsh, but do you understand why Smith has no trade value? His contract is horrible, and he really only fits in a 4-3, and he's below average at this point in his career.

Was for picks, and didn't happen two weeks before the season started. There's no way someone as good as Colston or Graham gets traded this late. And which hypothetical OLB of equal value are you all expecting to get back?

I don't believe there's a chance in hell there's a trade; however, the point to made was that teams trade for injured players...ergo, the Revis trade.

Did you just start watching the NFL?
nah. have been busy with work though, so if others have suggested we trade either Colston or Moore for a starting LB in the last week, I've missed it.

Was I drunk in suggesting that? Nope, but I WAS tired after finishing a 16 at the hospital; but this morning the idea still seems intriguing. I think it would take balls on the Saints' part, because
a) it would mean we have enough confidence in the remaining receivers to cut ties with a core player,
b) we (the Saints) would have to solicit the trade.

It might be hard for Payton to do something like this, as Colston and Moore are pretty high up on his list of "my guys". Coming in after missing a year, Payton might value having those 2 guys on the team more than having "a better player" from outside.

The move would have to be made before cuts, so you don't risk cutting your WR depth to make the final 53, and also don't risk carrying too many WRs and too few LBs in the event you can't make the deal.

And you'd have to find a team who'd covet Moore or Colston (New England or Chicago, maybe), but they'd need to have the necessary young LB to be worthwhile (I dunno who has 3 legit starters at OLB). Clearly it would be nice if we could package Will Smith into the deal, but I don't think we could trade Smith outright for anything right now.

Otherwise, the Saints are in a bit of a tight spot- they have too many WRs that fit their system well (and too many doesn't help them win more games than having "enough"), and still lack a legit OLB, one that can make a real difference.

No one is going to trade for Colston. Too much injury baggage at age 30. Plus he's got a pretty big contract. Much better fit for us here than he would be anywhere else.

great line

NFL player for player trades are rare anytime, muchless a week before the season starts.

Colston's contract isn't insane for a #1 receiver. I think the biggest problem the Saints are going to have trying to trade any receiver is the "Meachum Syndrome". Brees, like Manning and Brady, simply makes any receiver look like the second coming of Jerry Rice. Production just isn't carried over to the new team.

Teams aren't going to trade for our WRs when they can just wait for them to be released and be picked up on the waiver wire. Ex. Tanner/Parker

I meant the WRs who are battling for the last spot on the team. Or any other position for that matter. Why would a team trade waste a pick for Tanner if they can just pick him up on the waiver if he doesn't make the team. Only way I see them making a trade is if a team really wants a player and they know he'll end up on the Saints week 1 roster.

The fatal flaw in this trade plan is that Colston($10 mil) will cost us money against the cap to trade(a trade is like cutting a player; it accelerates their bonus to the current year).

And you'd be insane to trade Toon or Stills because they have tons of potential and are on cheap contracts.

So we have Parker and Tanner who have played well but do you think anyone would give us a better LB than what we have for one of them? They are still roster bubble guys after all.

Edit:
Sorry bad math there. Moore would actually save us $762,500 if we traded him but Colston would still cost money.

So if anything we would have to ask if Moore could fetch a starting OLB in a trade. I'm not seeing it but it's definitely more probable than Tanner or Parker.

is Graham a good enough choice to let Colston go?

I didn't read through the thread, so I don't know if this was said already.

They didn't choose to let possibly the best guard in the NFL walk away, so they could sign Colston to a new multi-year deal last off season only to trade him for a backup linebacker who has potential.

So, I posted this before knowing Smith was done for the year
quote:

Ok, here's a risky idea, but one that could help the team- trade a starting WR for a hot young linebacker. A guy who might be backing someone up as of now, but will step in and start for the Saints
because it seemed like our lack of a true OLB was a huge detriment, and we have a surplus of solid WRs.

I even read where one 49er fan was speculating the cost was Lance Moore Damn, I definitely should have kept my faith in Loomis. Haralson isn't "hot and young", but it sounds like he'll have a few years left in the tank... and he didn't cost us anything. Some people say he's a 1 yr rental, but the Saints should remain a playoff caliber offense until Brees retires, and I figure Haralson might still be the 2nd or 3rd best OLB on our team for a couple years, if Butler comes back and Wilson/Gallette develop (which we know nothing of, in truth), so I think he hangs around here a couple years.
