Derek Carr says he won't take a pay cut 'Especially with what I put on tape'

The New Orleans Saints have plenty of questions to answer this offseason, from who the head coach will be, to who the quarterback will be. Derek Carr missed seven games in 2024 due to injury, including the final four contests due to a broken hand. He signed a four-year, $150 million contract with New Orleans in 2023, and as it stands currently, will count $51.45 million against the Saints' salary cap in 2025. Would Carr take a pay cut to remain in New Orleans? The answer is no.
quote:
"I wouldn't take a pay cut," Carr told ESPN. "Yeah, I wouldn't do that. Especially with what I put on tape.
quote:Carr's comments are notable since it's the Saints we're talking about. New Orleans has the worst cap situation in the NFL, as it is currently projected to be nearly $67 million over the cap in 2025. No other NFL team is more than $22 million over the cap. A Carr restructure is almost guaranteed unless the Saints want to release him with a post-June 1 designation, allowing the franchise to spread out his dead cap hit over two years.
But yeah, I wouldn't take anything less to do this. It's hard enough putting our bodies through it. And you're trying to get everything you can for your family for it."
quote:Who Dat?
and I'm fully confident with what I put on tape. I'm not worried, if that's the case, and it had to change and all that kind of stuff. I'm super confident that whatever it is, I could get anywhere else to play. And so I'm not worried about that,

We must be watching different games.

Is it his fault for wanting the money Loomis said he would give him? Or is Loomis at fault?

Bruh.
He put on tape that he is same player but can no longer make it thru 17 games.
Def should take a paycut.

Nobody here would take a pay cut to help cover up mistakes of our employer.
He’s under no obligation to do so and honestly he shouldn’t.

What a douche. He and Brees, who held the organization hostage one offseason for this payday.
Call Brady what you want, but he took pay cuts to help his team win.

This is not actually true. He never demanded to be paid the highest, but he never took a true paycut. He basically would turn his salary into a bonus to spread the hits, or add guarantees in future years. But he didn’t restructure to receive less than contractually agreed to

This is all on Loomis. Pay the man what you promised just like all the blunder of deals he made in years past. Patriot's were a helluva lot closer to championships with Brady than Carr and Saints!

I am not a Carr guy, but you really can't blame him. He is the 17th highest paid QB in the league ($37.5 million), which puts him slightly below average for a starting QB. When Darnold and Purdy get paid this offseason, he will be the 19th highest paid QB.
There are only two non-rookie deal QBs that are starters that make less than him with Baker making $33 million and Geno making $25 million, and both of these guys were busts / journeymen that hit and their pay reflects that.
Carr is a middle of the road QB and is paid like it.

I wonder what he taped Mickey doing?

If Carr came in on day 1, turned this team into a SB contender and had us competing the past 2 years, would the board support him if he turned around a demanded more money now and insist on being paid amongst the top 5 QBs?
Why should he be expected to turn around and take a pay cut because he underperformed expectations, but is now properly compensated amongst his peers (17th amongst QBs, which also includes 8-10 QBs still on rookie deals). Are we also asking every other player to take pay cuts now, or just Carr because he's the QB and no one on this board likes him

Come on, man. Brees was underpaid for the production he gave prior to his big contract. He was a top 3 for most of his first 8 years or so in New Orleans.
At least he earned it.
Can't stand how this fan base has turned on Brees. It's absolutely insane to me.
There are far worse QB contracts for actual bad QBs, but by all means, take any opportunity to trash Brees. It's pathetic.
The Saints had nearly a decade of top 3 QB production. I'm not going to bash him for maximiing his money in his final years.

Yeah, I don't expect him to take a pay cut. I just find the extra things he says to be so awkward and unnecessary.

See ya! Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.

He didn’t go after his worth for the better of the team ok

So does this mean the Saints could actually cut him loose? I don’t think it is possible in 25. They cannot roll with Rattled/Hay-ner.
They would have to sign a broken down loser (think Tommy Kramer, or if you’re too young, Kirk Cousins) so what would be the point?

Yeah a pay cut I doubt was ever discussed except for espn. I'd still fork over a stack of money to trade him and his contract. But small chance as long as Loomis is in control.
