You guys are vastly overrating Taysom Hill.

There are people on this board that legitimately convinced Hill will not only be a starting NFL QB, but a good one at that. All based off of a handful of career passes and preseason play against 3rd stringers and practice squaders.

Payton seems to think that, so...

Not really. Payton thought he was the 3rd stringer.

If the Saints wanted to sign Taysom to a 5 year deal right now, what do you think it would take?

Taysom is in a weird spot. He probably hasn't done enough to earn a chance as a starter anywhere. His age limits his upside. But, there are still a few floating opinions (including his own) that think he could be a starter.

If the Saints thought this was the case (Payton has been quoted as such), and they thought it was smart to sign him now, what would it take?

I'm not sure there is a 5 year deal that could be made right now that didn't look like a bad contract one way or another 2-3 years from now.

He would be the 21st highest paid QB at $15/year. 23rd once Dak and Lamar get paid. and still Mayfield, Murray and Darnold would all get paid if their teams think they are franchise QB and probably make more than that.

Its the bottom price for a starting NFL QB.

I don't think Taysom is that guy tho.

EDIT: I said going price and meant bottom price.

No its not. You have qb's on rookie deals then you have guys who have signed FA starter monies. This is neither.

This is dead between the two. There's a $8M gap between top rookie deals and bottom 2nd Contract starters. Andy Dalton is bottom with $16M a year.

Do you think Taysom is better than Dalton? because there isn't a non-rookie contract starter that makes less than $16M/year.

It's not even close to the going rate.

How many of those guys below 21st are on rookie deals?

Context is key here.

I also don't get why we want to pay him this huge deal when we can pay him 1 year and about $6mil I think.

My premise is that $15/year isn't high for a starting QB not on a rookie deal. I also don't think Taysom can be a starting QB.

At least 11. Tannehill is basically on one. He makes $7m on a 1-year.

And of those 11, Mahommes, Watsonm, Prescott. Guys who will move to the top 5-10 range.

Why don't we just go straight to it and sign him to a 10 year 300 million dollar deal???

Andy Dalton's extension signed is literally 6 years old. There is quite near zero relevance to his contract now when speaking about new qb contract monies.

Right, so $15mil isn't the going rate for a guy who you will pay to be your QB that is not a rookie.
