Can we franchise and trade Teddy in the offseason?

I keep seeing post on how we should have traded Teddy before the trade deadline. Am I missing something here? I understand franchising a player cost big $, but we should be able to trade him rather quickly.

Kind of a dick move to not let him choose where he plays, and will hurt us in public perception when pursuing other free agents.

If you love something...let it go.

If it love you...it will come back.

Ultimately I agree with this. Teddy seems to really like it here and he is 27. I don't think its far fetched Teddy waits out Brees as long as he knows its sooner rather than later.

Yeah we’re not doing that. We’ve become a decent destination for FAs. That would look like a total dick move for a guy who has been fantastic for the organization. The likely modest return you get likely in no way makes up for the PR hit.

You dont just give away a 2nd round pick because of this public perception bs you are talking about. You can still trade him to where he wants to go. Would be stupid to not get a 2nd round pick back in exchange.

We could give him the transition tag and the trade would be a first, not a second.

You can trade him for whatever you want.

The tag value is based on if hes signed while the tag is applied to him.

Public perception is why the Browns are the Browns and the Redskins are the Redskins. They are forced to pay more because no one wants to play for their shite franchises. I think we make a pitch in free agency that I'm sure he will heavily consider, but holding his future ransom is not smart.

We would have to do some serious cap restructuring to be able to franchise tag Teddy and keep Drew.

If anything, Drew would have to take less money to allow us to pay Teddy 10+ to stick around at least another year. It is hard to keep two legit QBs on a roster and have to pay them somewhere starter money ballpark.

Did you know that other players will see this. It's public. Treat FA's like sh!t and that is the kind your team would get.

As said, you can trade for something other than the compensation if he were signed away.

No one is giving a first for Teddy. It may be hard to get a 2nd for him (at least without something like swapping them a 4th or 5th).

We got 5 wins without Drew Brees.... that's what we got for Teddy Bridgewater.

A good trade.

Jimmy G went for a 2nd. We already traded a 3rd for Teddy. It shouldnt be an issue getting a 2nd for him. The cap issue is the only reason you dont do it.

So just to clarify, you want to put Teddy on a 1-year $26,700,000 (estimated) contract for the 2020 season?

Side Note: Drew Brees will be making $21,300,000 next season

We’ll likely get a 3rd round comp pick if he signs elsewhere anyway. Would be stupid to do this to him.

Absolutely the Saints could, if they can come up with the cap space. Not sure what that salary assignment would be, but it's one way to lock him down while negotiating a long term contract.

If you plan to deal him, that's a shitty thing to do to Bridgewater, unless you send him to the Pats.

Personally I'd let him hit FA, I don't see him as the heir apparent to Brees. I do think he'll draw some decent offers.

Lol franchise a backup qb and pay him the average of the top 5 salaries at that position. Then what team will want him at that value? Brilliant idea. Texting loomis now.
