to be fair the report also says he expects to ask for less than his last deal.

and it was speculated he might have had enough leverage to ask for more than that if he chose to.

Drew could easily leverage the saints and choose to enter FA with any price tag he chooses and likely get it from a number of teams.

Drew lost some leverage when the market got more FA options with Cousins. Yes, he’s not Brees, but the drop off is not that dramatic and he’s younger and could be a long term solution.

More than one team needs a QB.

at a certain point in your career it becomes winning vs making as much money as possible. He's now had several successful investments and endorsements.

If he wants that second ring, he will not break the Saints' back so we can retain key players and add a piece or two. At this point in his life, you have to believe this will be the route he takes.

If Drew signs for 20 million a year, the dude will be the mayor of New Orleans when it's over with.

Will still get no credit from the "Brees should sign a team friendly deal so we can afford to build a team around him" crowd on this board

The way these things work is that the latest franchise qb to sign a deal also typically becomes the highest paid player in league history. It's just the way that steadily increasing salary caps and salary inflation makes it work. If he wanted he could push for a contract like Garrapolo. That's probably around his market value. If he takes less then it's because he wants to give a discount to try to push for a Super Bowl in his last years, and you could argue that he already did that on his last contract.

Drew has made enough money with the Saints. I know he won’t do it, but he should play for 2 or 3 mil per year from here on out. It would free up a lot of space so we could get the players we need to win another Super Bowl.

He should sign for $1 million per game next 2 seasons. $16 million base contract with $1 million bonus for each additional playoff game.

That would be a win/win
