If LSU QB Jayden Daniels was still on the board when we pick, would you draft him?

Yes, no questions asked. However, Derek Carr's contract makes this nearly impossible.

with Saints luck, some team like the Falcons will trade back in the first round right in front of NO

That’s exactly what the Chiefs did to us.

Probably the only way to get from under the Carr without having to restructure.

Add dummy years to Carr’s contract for cap purposes and he becomes the backup QB. No one should care about his feelings or ego.

You trust Pete to build and run an offense for JD?

You draft a QB and figure the rest out later. Even if that QB has to sit a year until you can.

Get the coaching and O line figured out and you have a guy ready to take over

Hopefully, very hopefully Mickey Loomis gets his brain back and clean house.

Carr’s deal is really a two year deal with a third year option. The fourth year of the deal (2026) is largely fictitious - it’s $50M in salary with no guaranteed money. It’s a $55M cap hit with $50M in cap savings if he is cut. That year will be voided. It will never happen, especially now.

Carr is effectively on a two year deal with a 3rd year option because the guaranteed money is in the first two years. Unless he plays All-Pro level next year, he won’t likely see 2025 in NOLA. If post 1 June 2025 cut, it’s only a $5.7M cap hit with $40M cap savings. You could draft a quarterback this year and let him sit behind Carr for a year and then take over as early as 2025.

My guess is the Saints were hoping to hit the jackpot with Carr but gave themselves an out after two years if it wasn’t working. It looks like the two options post 2024 season are either draft a QB in 24 or 25 draft, or sign another free agent.

Bottom line: Saints can draft a quarterback in this year‘s draft and have him sit only one year. In fact, they probably should.

All of this is hypothetical, but what do you do with Haener?

Not at all. Jayden can sit his first year. Third year we can cut Carr with little hit. Haener may or may not be a long term backup

Jayden could finally be getting legit top 15 interest. I think his season and talent has finally taken grip at the next level.

I'd listen to trade offers.

Short of an offer I couldn't refuse, yes draft him. He's a smart football player and we desperately need that.

As far as Carrs contract.

If Mickey can get this team from 70+ million over the 2024 cap to under the cap I think he can find a few extra million to sign Daniels.

I can’t tell if this is a joke. You let him go or keep him as a backup? Haener is not a QB you pass up other good QBs for.

Only if he has a competent OLine in front of him like he does right now. Do you think the Saints have that OLine? If not, do you think they'll have one in place by the time Jayden takes the wheel?

If he doesn't, he'll do his normal Jayden thing and make people ooh and aah over him (deservedly) until some blitzing monster breaks him in half.

Don't get me wrong: I love Jayden, and I think he's the best QB (player?) in CFB right now. Most of his success is due to his skill and work ethic - but not all. Some of that success comes from the offense around him as well.

Don't draft Jayden and put him behind a shite line with only one receiving threat and a RB.

The only thing different about him than Carr is the scrambling ability. Although that does put an extra area of concern for getting out of the pocket and getting clobbered.

Whoever drafts him is going to have to do work with running smart and pocket awareness. Kid leaves himself wide open to too many big hits because he won't slide or step out of bounds. And he still struggles in the pocket when it isn't perfect. Too many times he tried to take off and ran into the back of an OL or a defender. But, I think he finally showed this year that he can learn to adapt and get better. I don't know if the Saints are in a position to grab him though.

If there is any possibility at JD, you take it. However I'd guess there's at least 25 clubs who will also be taking equal interest.

I don't think the Saints are smart enough to get him, or to even be in position to get him.
