Jabril cox is going to be great in coverage.

Just wonder how he holds up against the run.

I really like cox but i don't know if i would want to spend a 2nd on him. 3rd rounder all day

Jamin, and Bolten

Two quality picks I think.
Jamin seems to have the best upside of LB'ers who could fall to us and Bolton while not flashy seems to be a guy who could start for many years and be a great follow for Davis when he retires.

I believe Cox is a special talent when it comes to pass defense. However, he lacks aggressiveness and physicality to shed blocks and make tackles in the run game. Actually has a pretty good size and frame to do so but doesn’t have the mentality. I don’t think that is something that can be taught or just flips on one day. He is a great fit as a WIL in. A true 4-3 defense where he can be a force in pass defense and run down plays from the backside with his athleticism but that is not an every down roll in our defense. It isn’t a good fit. We need a guy who gets off of blocks and makes tackles bc we only use two lbs. we would get eaten alive against heavy run teams like minny if not.

Spot on! He just isn’t a fit for us.

Funny everyone loved Kwon Alexander but he was one of the worst LB vs the run and is the worst tackling LB in the NFL since he entered the league

Possessing traits like being able to cover and create TOs are way more elusive to find in an LB than being able to “tackle good”

Right

20 years ago it was “well we want an LB that can play the run, and anything they give in coverage is lagniappe”

Now it’s the opposite. If you’re lost in coverage, you are rather useless & exposed. It’s now a game of matchups. And it’s easier to expose a singular player in pass coverage than it is on a running play. Especially for a second level player

Cox actually wasn’t bad coming downhill. He missed a lot of tackles but he was in position a lot. I wouldn’t say he really gets washed out as much as maybe the speed & strength of the SEC players was an adjustment for him

Not saying your wrong but where did you get this from

It isn’t just about tackle good. You have two linebackers on the field typically in our defense. You need to have two guys who are physical and disruptive. And honestly we need a guy who can both play the run and cover but we can’t put a guy on the field that is going to be pushed all over the field in the run.

You are right to an extent but we can’t afford to put a guy out there that is soft against the run. We honestly need a guy who can do both. A lot of those hyper athletic guys are hidden in 4-3 defense bc they can be put at WIL and run shite down from the backside. We need a true Mike or Sam that can hold his own in the run and is decent in coverage. Now can you draft Cox and play him on passing downs? Yes but that still puts a hole in our defense.

The speed and strength of the game will only go up. He is not ready to play a Sam or Mike in our defense and don’t think he ever will.

He got better as the year went on & started finishing plays. Still you can’t teach what he does in space

When we acquired him, he had the most missed tackles since he entered the league (89), 4 more than anyone else... and he had missed 35 games to injury!

2015 PFF run defense grade - 36.6
2016 - 59.2
2017 - 50
2018 - 49.5
2019 - 37.5
2020 - 60

Well again, Kwon was poor vs the run. Anzalone was poor vs the run. And AJ Klein was poor vs the run. All decent enough in coverage and rushing the passer via the blitz. Of course, ideally we want a LB that can do everything. But being great in coverage and having a knack for the ball are hard boxes to check for a LB. We can work with the rest. Positional flexibility has been big for Allen’s scheme. Cox could seemingly play a CGJ type role as one of the 5 “DBs” on the field at times

This would be the better fit for him with us. Cox doesn’t have the play strength to hold up inside the box and take on blockers as one of our two starting lbs. Kwon and Klein could even if there run defense grade isn’t very good

Not in his time as a saint. He put out some of his best tape ever.

I still think he is coming back and is way ahead of schedule.

What position do you think demario davis plays. How is that not an every down roll?

Well you thought Kiko Alonso was coming back too after 3 ACL. Didn’t play a down last year. Like I told ya last time these guys are fine if they’re cheap and depth. You can’t count on em for anything when they stay hurt

I think the best scenario for LB is Collins or Koramoah

Really Koramoah because he’s just so damn athletic. We could move Davis inside as he ages and let Koramoah take over as Will.

i would be shocked if we spent our 1st or even 2nd on a LB. our philosophy seems dead set on acquiring vets for key roles. we don't invest in LBs in the draft until the 3rd or later these days. got burned too many times in the SP era with early round busts. when we reset our draft philosophy, LBs went WAY down the positional value rankings

clearly OL and DL are the top

They were considering picking Baun in the 1st last year per Underhill

I just think everything is on the table with the amount of picks they have in the top 3 rounds

We don’t play a WIL linebacker much. We typically only play two linebackers so Demario is usually more of a SAM. Our WIL is replaced by CGJ as the nickel.

Yeah but we also saw Kwon completely changed our defense and brought it to a new level. We haven’t done anything in free agency to replace Kwon or Anzalone. Anzalone also hurt us in the playoffs. It is also a pretty deep linebacker draft in the first two rounds
