Could see them spending their first on a CB in Round 1 if the value is there then trading up for Mills in Round 2.

I’d be surprised if they took Mills in Round 1

Do not like reaching for the QB who's the next guy outside of the top tier of guys. Lots of career backups in that range.

Idk man. Davis Mills doesn’t look like a backup to me. He’s really impressed me and I’ve been against taking a QB this year for a while.

Feel like it is becoming increasingly rare to hit on a qb outside of the first round. Scouts are getting better at scouting qb talent/potential. Still have bust but you don’t see guys slip through the cracks anymore like you used to. Only hit that I can recall in the last 10 years is Dak Prescott.

Russell Wilson was a third round pick.

And like him or not, Kirk Cousins was a 4th round pick.

Yeah Dak is the big hit and Carr was mid 2nd but he was attached to the top tier someplaces but fell.
Mills' lack of game experience for someone who's turning 23 as rookie is a negative. Granted Stanford doesn't have an offense conducive to the QB to put up big numbers, he's never looked like that DUDE to me. Josh Allen is about the only good QB who was just alright in college but he has insane physical tools and going from a 56% completion in college to 69% this season is pretty crazy.

Russel Wilson was drafted 9 years ago though. Derek Carr and Jimmy G were second rounder in 2014 which was probably one of the better draft classes of the decade for positions not at qb. Neither Carr or Jimmy G are great qbs. Cousins was a fourth rounder in 2011 who is slightly better than Carr and Jimmy G. None of those three guys I want leading my team in a Super Bowl. The only true franchise qb outside of the first round that you can hang your hat on is Wilson 9 years ago and maybe Dak.

Regardless, I don’t really think scouts are that much better at scouting QB potential than they were 10-15 years ago. If you bring up teams not hitting on QBs after the first round you also have to account for how many are taken in the first round that also fail.

It’s not an exact science. If Payton wants to take Mills, I’ll believe in him and Ireland.

In the last 3 draft, these guys were taken after pick 28

Jalen Hurts 2.53
Drew Lock 2.42
Lamar Jackson 1.32

May be nothing, may be something. The weird Covid Year is going to make scouting more difficult.

Even if a team believes in Mills early, it will be hard to justify taking a guy that only played in 5 games last year and threw 7 TDs.

And who was on a 4-8 the year before with just ok results.

I don’t agree. I think they take more chances on potential these days which attributes to busts. I feel like 10 - 15 years ago you wouldn’t see qbs like Trey Lance, Carson Wentz, and Jordan Love that came from smaller schools taken in the first round. I feel like gms no longer leave any stones unturned when it comes to taking qbs. If they show franchise potential then they rarely slip out of the first.

I’m not sold on any of those guys except for Lamar. And he only works in a heavy run/play action scheme. It works but it is why he fell that far. If you took away his running ability he would be average at best. It is part of his game though and it works but will probably continue to struggle against good defenses in the playoffs. I feel that hurts and Lock will be back ups somewhere with in the next few years. My argument isn’t that you can’t find a serviceable qb outside the first but it is rare that you will found a guy that can win you a Super Bowl. I say load up next year and roll with Jameis. I’m not using a 2nd on a qb

Most normal years I would agree with you

Some guys will slip through the cracks because of Covid.

That’s a good point to be made. Wouldn’t be mad if Sean took a shot. I am just not expecting much from it if he does

Payton and the FO have recently really liked some guys that have panned out. I’d be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if they took Mills in the second round and he just sat for a year to learn.

I mean I would be ok with it if we took him and Sean liked him. It just isn’t someone I would be thrilled about. Sean also like Garrett Grayson and Sean Canefield.

We know he liked Mahomes, Wentz, and Luck. Good call on Mahomes, luck was a no brainer, and the jury is still out on Wentz

He also liked Lamar. You can't really use the Grayson and Canfield picks. Different scouts. With Ireland in control, he's been right a lot more on some of these guys
