Zion's fitness clauses in his contract should be enforced for several reasons

1. He does not deserve the money he has been given. He has fleeced this franchise and fanbase.
2. It will clean up our cap situation quite a bit
3. It will piss him off and make him want a trade
4. With a smaller cap hit, his trade value will be much higher.

I could be wrong, though.

I agree.
I’m of the opinion that this is what’s really going on with his “injury”. He’s overweight and over the contractual terms and is firing his representation and probably battling ownership over this. He won’t come back until he’s back in shape and a vote of confidence from ownership….oh wait. Didn’t they just come out and say the future is still to build around Zion??????

Pretty sure all it does is make his contract non-guaranteed which allows us to waive him with no cap ramifications.

I don't think there's any reduction in salary, fairly certain there is not.

Over what exactly?

We're not waiving him right now, so what could they possibly be batting about with respect to his weight vs his contract?

The offseason is when a cut is possible. He could be saying guarantee my contract or else….

Over the 285 + bmi clause. I bet he’s over both. Something isn’t right. How many years are we supposed to take the word of the organization regarding a hamstring “pull”, “injury”, etc…?
My two cents are that he NEEDS someone attached at the hip to get him A. Proper Diet and workout B. Someone to get him actually interested in basketball and being in New Orleans. Whatever has been tried doesn’t work. They won’t cut him and we will never get equal value in trade.
I want him here and successful. I just will not take the bullshittery that our fanbase gets plastered with annually. I’ve been a loyal fan since the Hornets moved to NO. I’m sick of guys blaming the city for their lack of success.

Why would you cut him? His contract has value and he still has value as a talent. You may not get a haul for him but he's gonna get you something.

I'm curious, because I've read different things about what the guarantees mean. There are partial guarantees, as well as the fully-guaranteed stipulations. I wish we had a more clear understanding of them.

Contract details per The Athletic/Mike Vorkunov (12/21/23)

Guaranteed seasons became non-guaranteed due to games played clause:
2024-25: 50% guaranteed, fully guaranteed 1/7/25
2025-26: non-guaranteed, fully guaranteed 7/15/25
2026-27: non-guaranteed, fully guaranteed 7/15/26
2027-28: non-guaranteed, fully guaranteed 7/15/27
Guarantee triggers exist if certain criteria has been met:
20% of 2025-26 salary becomes guaranteed if passes all six of his weigh-in checkpoints during the 2024-25 season
40% of 2025-26 salary becomes guaranteed if plays >= 41 games during 2024-25 season, additional 20% if plays >= 51 games, remaining 20% if plays >= 61 games.
Salaries for 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons can be re-guaranteed if above metrics are hit the season prior
Further protections via:
Weight must be less than 295 lbs; body fat monitored
Injury sustained to right foot

I've been against trading Zion up until now. With everything that has happened to him including becoming a father we should have seen personal growth by now but there are still rumors that he isn't taking his rehab seriously? He is just not going to become a responsible adult while still a Pelican. Without becoming a responsible adult that takes his career seriously, he's always going to be a major injury risk. If he ever pulls it together it will only be after we reject him.

Yeah, I slowly came to that realization over the last 2 years. He's the reason why nobody else (save Herb) has had a remotely consistent role over the last 4 years. The team has been publicly building around a guy who has never been remotely bought into the team or franchise. That formula is destined to fail.

It seems like someone read the room recently, because he's suddenly at every game. I think it's too little too late, though.

There are a lot of smart basketball people on here. So I ask this with genuine curiosity. How would Zion put it together as a mature player?

His athleticism is eroding. Whether losing weight or not, his game is dependent on being an athletic freak. That will diminish. He's going to be a 6'6 "big", that is not a great rebounder and is not overly physical on the defensive side. I don't see how his game ages well. We thought he would have this short window to dominate, then eventually transition into a supporting role down the line.

I just saw an interview with JR Smith, talking about Zion. Even he said, Zion should be a two guard or a wing. He's not a big. None of this makes sense until he gets this..

Or else you get a fat , lazy, unmotivated player until the 28-29 season.

I’m not saying it will work, but at this point if I’m him doing doing whatever it takes to get my contract guaranteed. We know he won’t stay in shape and healthy in New Orleans, but it’s his only play at the moment to string along the franchise.

By becoming a professional for the first time and getting in peak shape and conditioning.

Because he's out of shape and in shite condition, always has been.
