Games played has to come into play as well. And, what they do on the other side of the ball, while still playing that kind of defense. Imagine if AD didn’t have to put up 28 a night for the Pels to win and could just focus on defense

he would win an NCAA championship

He has the strongest case for any of the main four (Gobert, Embiid, George, AD).
not so sure about that w/r/t Embiid and Gobert. each team suffers a huge drop in DRating when Davis/Emiid/Gobert sit. yet, Gobert/Embiid get their teams to elite, top tier defense level when they play. Davis doesn't.
DRating isn't the be all, end all stat. just like bpg/spg/etc aren't either.
defense is just tough to judge. no (public at least) stats available for correct rotations made or drives/shots that never happen.
Davis is a superior defender. he is unquestionably great. Embiid/Gobert are great. George too. not sure there's a clear cut, no brainer case for anyone

Yet, it isn't being talked about enough.
i've seen/heard plenty of buzz for Davis as DPOY.
now, he may not win it; to me, it feels like it's Gobert's to lose. and he would be deserving, even with only about 55 GP

If AD misses out on 24 million because of missed games, that should be a factor in voting for this.

DRTG:
Gobert 100
Embiid 101
Davis 103
George 106
DWS
Davis 4.2
Embiid 3.8
George 3.6
Gobert 3.3
not sure where you are getting these numbers, particulary the DRating.
NBA.com has Gobert/Embiid both at under 100 DRating when they are ON. Davis is at 104.3 ON
also, NBA.com has their DWS (which seems to be per 48, not based on GP). Gobert leads the league in eligible players and Embiid is top 10. Davis is around 20.
if you want to argue availability is the first ability, totally fair and justified. but let's be clear about what the stat you used means- noted defender James Harden has been top 10 in that category before.

sure. totally reasonable to dock Gobert for not enough games.
and it seems as if you're saying Davis shouldn't have been docked for missing games. if that is true, then, other than vouching for your guy (which is fair), not sure why Gobert should be docked for it now
i personally think that provision of the CBA is a fricking joke. should have never happened
Posted on 3/29/18 at 2:42 pm to corndeaux
Provisions like the Rose Rule allow max level players to take money that otherwise would have gone to overpaid mid level players or owners who wouldn’t be paying as much or any taxes. It might be one of the fairer rules in a CBA built around controlling costs by limiting the earnings of the top players.

I am not docking him, I am saying to be consistent with the way you vote for these things. So you can't be all nba because you missed 20 games, ok. So why should you be DPOY if you miss 30? My main argument for AD as DPOY is the fact that he isn't just the guy on defense, he is the guy on offense, too. The amount of energy he has to use on offense then go around and play stellar defense, Gobert could never. But, if they want to be consistent with how they vote for All NBA, games missed should be a factor in here, too. If all things are equal and Gobert and AD play the same amount, sure I'm fine with him getting it, though I still believe what AD does on both sides while still playing elite defense is far more impressive.

who exactly is it fairer for?
if Davis or Rose or Embiid is worth 35% of the cap, then they should be able to get that in years 5-9. and they certainly shouldn't have that worth dictated by a vote of writers
and if I'm a team, I'd rather pay that premium for those years than years 10-14

you are docking him, like voters docked Davis, which is fine. I didnt agree then and don't now. But each his own
Many reasons to pump Davis for this, but if your main case for him to be DPOY is his offense, I think you're probably doing it wrong

I would certainly prefer a coach or player vote over a media vote for what is essentially a work related bonus. But it being more fair comes out of the fact that the system is so unfair to max players to begin with. Me saying it’s more fair doesn’t mean I think it’s fair overall.
Posted on 3/29/18 at 3:37 pm to corndeaux
It's not his offense. it's the fact that he plays offense at a top 5 level in the NBA, AND still plays elite defense. If he were able to do what Gobert does, and be average on offense, not having to carry the offensive load, his defensive numbers would be astronomical.

Who do the Pelicans want to win this game?
If OKC loses that is one team ahead of the Pelicans losing, which helps the Pelicans get home court possibly. Whereas, if the Spurs lose that is a team behind the Pelicans which gives the Pelicans some breathing room to not slip down to 7th or 8th.

I think it's more important that SA keeps losing. Staying out of 7th or 8th is critical. We'll worry about getting up to 4th on Sunday

People are stupid and want to ignore the great two way players. That is one of the things that set Davis, Holiday, and Cousins apart on our team. We have two way players making up our core.
The four best players in the league are Lebron James, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis. They are long versatile elite two way players.
