If we start trying to play Oakafor with the starters, you will see why Hayes was the pick.

I would argue if a shooting big is your development goal, Wood is a more realistic prospect to be there and we already have him.

Goga at 17 would have fit this perfectly but we passed

what we gave up to move down to get him was not worth it imo

i agree and this is the issue. maybe we're all overrating 4 b/c it appeared there was a PR hype train going (garland didn't even go 4th), but man a project big and a bench guard seems like a weak haul for the 4th

AG wants to run and run. We needed a young center who was athletic and could play our system. Hayes is freakishly athletic for his size, plays like a madman and does have touch (FT%) to work with. His plus game is his defense which could make an impact right now with his 7’3+ wingspan, his motor and willingness to play D. I wanted to stick and take Hunter but I’m coming around to the moves if we can score in FA.

People must not being seing his free throw percentage (74%).

And he also showed an ability to improve as the season progressed, as he shot something like 83.2% from the line during conference play.

I think People were hoping for 3 shooters after the Zion pick.

The pick for Hayes is real simple.
What do you want out of a 5?

Protect the rim? check

ability to switch onto guards on the perimeter and hold your own? we'll see, but with his athleticism, likely check. Goga will never be able to do this.

create havoc on the offensive glass? check

hit an open shot? we'll see, but with his athleticism and early signs of shooting touch, likely check.

Finish at the rim? big check.

Make free throws so you can close out games and not be a liability? check.

Biggest issue for me is that a traditional center is no longer needed in the league and to pick one that can't shoot makes it even worse and he's not even that great of a rebounder. Im glad they didn't take Bol Bol in the first but would of loved to take a flyer on him in the second round and if it didn't work out no big deal

Because the kid was going to be an NFL wide receiver until two years ago and doesn't really know how to play basketball yet. He can't pass at all, can't defend without fouling, etc. Oh,and he's a string bean because he hasn't filled out yet.

People want us to be great next year, and they don't want to wait for Hayes to develop.

The game has changed. Hayes would be great if drafted 20 years ago.
Right now Ingram is by far the best offensive starter. This team has too many mediocre shooters. This is Monty Williams type team. The talent does not match Gentry's system.

this is all bullshite. NOBODY expected Bol Bol to be picked anywhere near the top 10

this is my biggest concern. super athletic big men should dominate the boards in college. it makes me worried he's too soft

if he's soft, he ain't protecting the rim

I don't think it's hate for Hayes himself. I think it's more that he's a pretty big project for #8. As with all prospects who are very raw with huge potential, there's big bust potential. It's going to come down to his work ethic and the organization's ability to develop him.

I think it's a gamble but it's a calculated gamble. I do have more faith in this working out under this front office than I would under the previous group.

That's not the case for this team when your other 4 starters aren't pure shooters but they all play above average defense and can get to the rim at ease then your center needs to be able to creat some space and knock down some shots

Hayes may not develop until he's on his 2nd team, or we may get a year of good play out of him and then worry about paying him a shite ton of money. projects sound great when you're "building" but even if they hit, they create issues

The draft is a huge gamble. Which is why Griffin wanted to trade for a young vet. Obviously, Turner wasn’t available at the right price, so we gambled on Hayes. He may hit, he may not. Just like everyone else in the draft.

CBS compared him to Clint Capela. It’s a fair comparison and we can hope he gets to (and exceeds) that level.

I mean he’s an 8th overall pick. We have to wait and see.

because he isn't Garland, who this board had a hard on for since the reports of his clean bill of health came out...

personally, Cleveland fricked that pick up, IMO... you essentially have small G's who are not great facilitators... it's gonna be interesting to see how they make that work.... i personally would've gone with Culver, if i were them, to pair with Sexton, as he gives you a guy that can play 1-3, maybe even 4 in a pinch, but they went with a guy who can only play 1-2, and they already had that, so i dunno...

Did the Raptors not just win the finals with a traditional center? I know Gasol is shooting more 3s, but he is not athletic by any means.

The Center position is less valued, but is absolutely needed when teams go to the half court offense. You can't play small ball 60 minutes a game.

He hit 3 jump shots in college. That’s a concern.
