Why do no big time players want to play in Boston?

I know they had racial issues back in the Bill Russell days, but what gives now days? They have a top coach, stable management, are proven winners, and are one of the most successful franchises all in sports.
They are also a top 10 market. You would think from how often players go out of their way to say they don't want to play there that it was Cleveland.

There is a perception of it being racist based on some players experiences.
Right or wrong i get why some people would not want to play there.
To me, Dallas has never been a player destination basketball wise and i have 0 idea why.

Kyrie is just a weird guy.
Lebron has always hated Boston since his early playoff runs and by proxy klutch.
Who else is there?

They've traditionally built through the draft or traded

Garnett wanted nothing to do with them.

My guess is that a lot of it has roots in the Lakers vs Celtics feud of the 80s.
The Lakers were a flashy, fast team with guys like Kareem, Magic, and Worthy as their faces. The Celtics were a slow, methodical team mainly with white guys like Bird and McHale as their faces.
The historical issues with race in places like Southie probably don’t help.

History of being a racist city. And din't the organization handle the Isiah Thomas fiasco weirdly. If memory serves me correct he did everything he could for the team and was lied to and then traded. That kind of bad player handling goes a long way for future perspective players.

And Gordon Hayward signed with them.
And Horford signed with them.
Boston is okay.

Boston is racist and liberal. Just like the south used to be.

Because these guys want to be celebrities moreso than champions. LA and NY are the best markets for celebrities. Boston isn't as sexy market even though they are currently a solid team and historically may be the best franchise in NBA history
Take Davis for example. He's tired of losing in NOLA. That's understandable until you realize his "preferred" destinations are LA and NY...both of whom have been as bad, if not worse than NOLA since Davis has been in the league.
The NBA markets its individual players better than any major US sport (that's largely because they are fewer players both on the teams and playing field than the others). NBA guys have the best chance at becoming world-wide mega celebrities (see Jordan, Lebron, etc). All these guys (except maybe Kawhi) want to be Jordan/Lebron the mega-star moreso than Jordan/Lebron the champion. Going to LA/NY is perceived to be the easier route vs. doing like Steph Curry and elevating himself along with a largely unremarkable franchise though years of tremendous play.

Always thought Atlanta would be a bigger “destination” as well. Huge city, lots of stuff to do, cheaper than a lot of big cities.

Kevin Garnett said it best when he accepted the trade there. He mentioned that he had no desire to play in Boston but once he got there, he fell in love with the atmosphere around the Celtics.

Atlanta is the city version of a “suitcase college”. Lots of people there, but no one actually from there and no real emotional investment in the area.

Horford wants to retire and is willing to take a smaller long-term deal to do it. It's self-serving as well, but I think the perception is largely built simply because of a handful of players that are wanting either of the glamour markets and Kyrie, who is just an oddball.

Cold weather town. If you are stuck having to deal with that, would rather do it in a more glamour city. NY, Chi, Philly are all better in that regards based on my experience.

AD is trying to get himself to LA, maybe NY.
