Given the Nets, Clips, and Lake show are reasonably depleted draft capital wise, can we steal a 1st from Boston, Indiana, or maybe even a division foe like San Antonio or Dallas? Where is the trade for JJ?

Doubtful we get a first now, this past offseason was the time to do it when he had a lot of interest. Probably too late now.

Celtics for Ojeleye and a future 1st is the deal I’d do

He’s too old to warrant a 1st round pick

Korver was traded for a 1st and more at 36.

I think people hear 1st and assign "average value". But there's a big difference between a lottery pick, a mid 1st and a late 1st. To some of these playoff teams keeping an eye on their payroll they'd rather turn those 1sts into either something more proven to be worth paying for, or something unguaranteed (2nds).

exactly, a first from a contender is basically a useless 26-30 pick, but it makes us feel good and it seems like value

People are pissed we didn't keep 24 so we could draft someone like Payton Pritchard (26) or Desmond Bane (30). There aren't gems every year, but a lot of times you can find solid bench players in that range. Take 2017 for instance, Kuzma, Derrick White and Josh Hart went 27, 29, 30.

This team needs a lead guard as it's #3 player and then needs 7 more effective but reasonably priced players. Having multiple late 1sts every year is a pretty good way to build a pipeline of effective cheap depth like the Spurs always seem to do. Does another late 1st help much in pursuit of someone like Beal? Probably not, but it will be of value in keeping things going once you land that 3rd star player.

Financially a lot of cap strapped teams rather a 2nd than a late 1st anyway. Good drafting like the Spurs can do that for you in keeping those late picks.
Murray - 29th pick
Mills - 55th pick
Johnson - 29th pick
Walker - 18th pick
White - 29th pick
We on the other hand have struggled.

As it stands, we need a lead ball handler who can limit these turnovers that we're so prone to having. Another 1st could help build a pipeline like above, but acquiring assets to trade for one might not be the worst idea.

So can JJ. Just not on a team with a terrible offensive scheme

i agree, by useless i meant statistically it's rarer to find consistently high value in picks 25-30. the spurs are a main exception bc they mine for mid value. i do see late round selections trending for the better in terms of value (all the guys mentioned above). we could've had RJ Hampton for Christ's sake, of course that's the: "is he Exum or is he MPJ?" question. so true, practical value can be found end of the 1st round, but NOP doesn't seem interested in mid value right now. they want guys with really high ceilings (Zion, Hayes, Lewis, NAW)
