I guess this is something, Cole Aldrich was way more talented than Withey and he can barely stay on a team.

Get out of here with all that clear rational thinking.

So was Marc Gasol

Is there really a difference in player skill from the 20s in the 1st round to the early second round? No, there isnt.

Grab a few rebounds and block a few shots. Those are skills that wont need much work. And that's all we really need from him.

J Smitty and Withey at center for the Pelicans?

My god the vaginas in New Orleans aren't going to know what hit them

I think Withey is a perfect complement as a 3rd big as he develops. But expecting him to be as good as Lopez this season is a reach

It's a long term build, not too worried about it this year, just looking forward to a much more exciting team

The point flew right over your head.

Its not that Withey wont be better than Lopez. Its that he wont be better as a rookie than Lopez was this past season.

Which is fine. Like I said, Withey should develop into a great fit with Ryno/Davis. I still think they sign a vet on a minimum deal to fortify the frontcourt

Getting Aldrich would have been a good move for this team. He does the same thing Withey is going to do.

Aldrich was stuck behind Perkins/Ibaka in OKC, Asik in HOU, Cousins in SAC. He hasnt even gotten a chance to play more than 11 MPG wth any team he's been on.

It's a necessity, imo.

I've seen speculation that Charlotte may move Brendan Haywood since it got Al Jefferson. He's only getting $2 million per year because he was an amnesty pickup.

I want Lopez to have no connection to this team ever.

Using history as our guide, it is almost certain Withey will not be as good as Lopez, let alone better. Find me a 2nd round rookie C that had as good a year as Lopez did last season.

Hedging your bet there. First it was Withey was not an upgrade; now, it's almost certain.

History isn't a good barometer of what Withey will do, or not do. Here's why: 1. Second round centers (or any position for that matter) didn't normally start the first year in the past because teams spent what they had to get more experienced players. With the new luxury tax in place, we'll see this dynamic change. Teams can only afford so many max contracts.
BTW...Although he wasn't a regular starter his first year, DeAndre Jordan held his own when call upon (he was the 35th pick in the 2008 draft)
2. The style of play has changed...especially for the center position.

My gripe is that you made a definitive statement with absolutely no idea of how this will shake out.

No, it didn't. Gasol was a 2nd round center who was better his rookie year than Lopez was last year.

Most high picks don't even get the chance to play right away, let alone 2nd rounders. So yeah, they aren't many who had better numbers than Lopez, who played 25 mpg.

Withey is a four year guy who should get minutes right away. We will see how he measured up.

As mediocre as Lopez was, he had some experience and skill dealing with NBA big men. Whithey does not, and that makes a huge difference even if he played four years in college. I like Withey, but the likelihood of his rookie season being as good as Lopez last year is pretty fricking low.

I still love this addition. Added a C after losing Lopez, and although he is young, he ceiling is extremely high. He can come in and give us 10-15 minutes a game, and be solid.
