Collins paired with Zion on offense sounds great.

Collins paired with Zion on defense/rebounding does not sound great

Collins at $25mil...that's the biggest issue that makes it a nope.

Clippers are rumored to be interested in finding a big man to backup Zubac. Wonder if they're interested in Willy also?

Seeing rumors on twitter that Hart is available.

Bring him back home?

I think theyd rather use hart to upgrade than trade him for contracts and a pick. They just wont let the dame era die

Nah, whoever we bring in as a wing has to put up 3s at a decent volume.

I'm only interested in 3 things:

Ball Handling/Creation
Rim Protection
3 Point Shooting

I’d reverse the order but otherwise completely agree.

But I still think a good rotation piece behind Zion at the 4 that can shoot and still help defend the paint is the Pels biggest hole.

Right now we are deep in a lot of spots, but Jaxson is Zion’s backup which is why we often run without a 4 man and that puts the biggest weakness of our 5s front and center.

That's it, for sure.

They could send him to us and still upgrade.

Say we think the OG price is to high and Raps wants to blow it up, we could offload Graham to Raps and bring in Hart, and still have enough salary left to bring in another cheap “shooter” that would only cost 2nds, maybe McBuckets or Richardson or Burcs.

OG goes to Portland and they get their upgrade.

There's no order.

Ideally I would want anyone we acquire to be plus in two of those categories

I really dont think creation is that big of a deal when healthy, which of course we never are.

Rim protection is my #1 concern. We're one of the worst teams in opponent % at the rim. Its like a layup line every night against Jonas

Jonas is a big dude. If he is actually at the rim then he can provide some D, but the reason I keep bringing up the Pels deficiencies at the 4 is because it’s so easy to just put him (or Larry/Billy) in a P&R up top, then drive without worry because usually our secondary back line is a SG/SF and sometimes the SG is 6’ tall when Willy has DG and/Jose playing together. It’s just a recipe to beg teams to drive the paint off P&R.

I'm not sure how to find stats specifically at the rim with certain guys on or off, but when Nance is on the court, our defense gives up a worse eFG% than when Jval is off the court.

Probably not the best data but food for thought...

Exactly. Jonas could work on a team with a long shot blocking 4 but our 4 is 6'6 so he cant cover if jonas gets beat in the PnR. If we arent getting rim protection from our 4 or our 5 then how can we expect to protect the rim?

Collins is not coming to the Pels and has no place here. But if the Pels are asking, it’s likely to determine his costs for a possible three team arrangement.

Collins would help bring established talent and his natural style of play is a fit for the roster.

CJ-Herb-BI-Collins-Zion would be an aggressive unit

If acquiring both Trent Jr. and John Collins is possible, I would pay the piper and prepare for the goood times to roll.

CJ-Herb-BI-Zion-Val

-Collins
-Trent Jr.

[ -Murphy III -Naji -Nance -Alvarado]

It’s possible the Pelicans leverage their depth and become buyers before the deadline.

Its not.

Even putting Val and Graham into the trade you still have to add another 13 million to stay under the tax.

Sounds like to me your concern is “how to spend other people’s money.”

I agree, it’s pushing quite a few chips. But, I don’t view it as an ALL-IN scenario or as crippling of a move as your “must avoid tax” stance would suggest.

Im being realistic in knowing that we are not paying the tax this year.

There is no all in scenario we make this year that drives us over the tax, we cannot be a repeater tax team next season, our market cannot afford the price increases it would take for Gayle to afford the repeater tax.

How do you figure?

CJ/Zion/BI/Collins and let's assume very conservatively that GTJ would be paid $20mil with his extension...

Just those 5 guys would be paid about $148mil next season. And again, GTJ will get more so that # is likely over $150 on just 5 guys.

The luxury tax is set around $162mil next season. I'm not sure who we're sending back for GTJ and Collins but just Naji/Jose/Nance/Dyson/Trey/Herb is around $25mil.

With just that alone, you can see the money isn't really adding up if you assume we won't be a heavy tax team or repeater tax team, which is a pretty safe assumption.

I think it’s clear that team is a tax team. We don’t want to be repeaters if we aren’t contenders so we’d need to be confident. I think Gayle will give us one shot at the tax. She won’t let us stay over for too long. I don’t know when to push in the chips but we have to eventually. The extra picks we have are going to be used up in a few years and we can’t keep adding rookies.
