Tonight was Point Zion taken to its extreme, by design.

[Shamit] SVG said they decided tonight before the game that they would play Zion at point all night with Lonzo out. Said they haven't done this before for a whole game and they decided to do it as long as Zion could keep doing it

Have to give SVG credit here. And the fact that Z was able to do this versus Phi is incredible.

People are quick to throw shade at SVG, but when Zion is on pace to have an all time historical season from an efficiency standpoint, and has transitioned without any real hiccups into an ultra efficient facilitator, on one of the best offenses in the league, he and his assistants(who people wanted to dismiss as subpar hires, myself included) deserves some credit here.

He does for sure. Him going in on PZ is really good coaching.

But we are still a losing team and have the 2nd worst Defense.

Correct, for the overall season, we certainly have underachieved to date.

PZ isn’t a Van Gundy thing, it’s a Griff thing. We’d be running point Zion regardless of who was coaching. Point Zion has always been Griff’s and Zion’s vision. Hard for me to give credit to Van Gundy when it was more of a mandate from upper management and his star player than specifically Van Gundy’s idea.

I mean yeah but you’ve certainly seen flashes of what this core is capable of if they continue to work and the FO builds around PZ

SVG gets all the crap for bad things but never credit for good things. We are a young team so some mistakes can be blamed on youth but he should get credit for the development of Zion, Hayes or NAW. Kira is also showing some growth. SVG makes mistakes and he admits them. I don’t thing he is the best but IMO he is a very decent coach (much better than Gentry who seemed like a nice guy but had no clue what was going on)

BI as a 2 was also Griff's thinking. Not sure that's feasible with Point Zion. I mean I don't think it is. Having Zion and BI as your guards leaves a lot to be desired ball handling wise. It's fun to think about offensively and for the future when we decide to use all our draft capital on someone though

I don't think he is. Point Zion is a perfect compliment to Zo. Seriously, put Zion and Zo in a Z-chart.

funny you say that b/c if Lonzo wants to play like a 3/D guy, he fits in with your worries pretty well. he can shoot 3s, dribble if needed, and facilitate better than any "3" outside of the truest elite in the NBA

the only worry is (1) if he accepts that as his NBA role and (2) keeps that shooting up

We need Zion to have the ball that much every single night. He’s a top ten offensive player right now.

The Lakers don’t have stretches where LeBron doesn’t touch the ball. The Pelicans shouldn’t have stretches where Zion doesn’t touch the ball

Why? Lonzo isn’t a PG. Zion being the primary ball handler makes me want to keep Lonzo and his elite catch and shoot 3s even more.

What made Zion performance last night even more amazing was he did in with probably the worst spacing lineup you could have in the NBA. Zion would had about 15 assists if we hit some open 3's

Stop it, some of you all just can’t let go of your hate. Mandate? There is zero evidence Griff is coaching at the FO level.

People have talked about Zion being a playmaker since college( see Coach Nick’s Youtube channel before the draft about Zion’s potential as a stronger, more athletic Julius Randle type facilitator), but that doesn’t mean you just put the ball in someone’s hands and say: go.

Just saying we envision that this guy can play with the ball in his hands means shite until you can figure out how to do it successfully.

SVG and his staff MADE it a reality. They have slowly pieced together a very complimentary set of offensive motions and plays to maximize Zion’s success and they have not once pushed him too far, too fast, and the result has been a player that is increasing his usage while maintaining or increasing his efficiency.

Problem is, it appears Lonzo still thinks he is.

I mean how many times a game do we see Lonzo stay behind with the rebounder and cue for the ball only for him to jog it up the court and move it to the side now that the defense is set against us?

I will be curious to see if Lonzo can adjust to not being the initial facilitator every other possession, which he basically demands to be right now.

I continue to think Point Zion isn't a good idea, especially when Lonzo and Kira are also good points and show a bit more 3-point shooting than Zion.

And if David Griffin really wants to build like this, you have accordingly to surround Zion.

We already know Zion has often the ball and isn't a good shooter.
So Griff needs good off-ball players and which are good at shooting also.

That means Ingram and Adams don't fit with Zion (Ingram needs the ball to show the full extent of his game and is above all a mid-range shooter, not a 3 point shooter).

Adams doesn't fit either (he's an off-ball player but has neither a good 3-point shot, nor a good mid-range shot)

I absolutely agree with both posts above

Also I want the Pels to keep Lonzo but if he can’t accept point Zion then good riddance
