One morning this week, when I call the Pelicans beat writer for Louisiana’s largest newspaper, he asks if he can call me back. “Sorry,” Scott Kushner says a few minutes later. “People just pop into my office.” Kushner isn’t talking about his newspaper office. He’s talking about the consulting firm where he works a full-time job, 9-to-5. The NBA reporting stuff happens only at night.

...During the 2015-16 season, he shared the Advocate beat with Brett Dawson, another part-timer. Dawson ran so low on cash that he got rid of his apartment and started looking for a single room to rent.

...Pelicans writers look upon a giant, heaving press corps like the one in Oakland with wonder. If we count only standard, non-bloggy beat writers, there are as many people covering Golden State for The Athletic as there are covering the Pelicans, period. “They’ve got someone there just to cover what Kevin Durant is saying on Twitter,” Guillory says. “They’ve got someone to cover Klay’s dog. I’m over here writing every story by myself.”

Despite all the challenges it does feel like the coverage of the team is improving. Kushner, Guillory and Eichenhofer do a good job covering the team as professionals, and the semi-pros have been stepping up with more content and podcasts than ever.

Mike Triplett is writing for both the Saints and Pelicans now. Nice to have our own guy at ESPN now ever since Justin Verrier was fired.

since day 1 with the hornets, the bloggers have been the place to go for opinion and analysis.

i suspect that that's the case in most other NBA cities as well, despite any disparity in newspaper coverage. now...TV coverage is totally different. i know fletcher gets shite on for his goofy takes sometimes, but the other night he did a full five minute segment on TV with jake madison, oleh kosel and david grubbs. nobody give the pels and the pels bloggers that kind of exposure more than fletcher does

Shame on WWL for not providing more Pels coverage. Kristian jumped down some dude's throat that was giving the program director shite for not bringing up Pelicans topics. As far as writers, who gives a shite. No one reads newspapers anymore.

If New Orleans has a sports pecking order, the Pelicans finish behind the Saints, LSU, and probably the SEC game of the week. (In The Advocate’s April 22 Baton Rouge edition, the Pelicans’ Game 4 win competed for space on the sports page front with LSU gymnastics.)

I had absolutely no idea Kush was not a full time beat writer. That’s insane.

I've been talking Pelicans all season and having hour long segments on them with Jake Madison and other writers. Maybe you should listen more often.

Exactly,
Pelicans are third in the city of New Orleans behind Saints and LSU Football. If the Baseball team was hot right now Pels could probably be 4th.

Eichenhofer

He's awesome and knows what he's talking about. My favorite person to follow about anything regarding the Pelicans

I met Eichenhofer a while back and he’s a real nice guy. That said, he’s basically just a mouthpiece for the Pelicans at this point. I don’t feel like he adds a ton that Kushner doesn’t already provide.

He also has a tough job being officially part of the team. That does get him access and travel with the team, but he doesn't get to wade into the controversial areas like trade and injury rumors. He usually has to publish something 5 days a week and manages to put out articles worth reading.

Scott Kushner just tweeted this out about the article.

Bryan did a great job here.

But please don’t feel a smidge bad for me (as some comments have). I do this entirely as a choice. @theadvocateno & @SchiefAdvocate have allowed me to pursue a dream despite hurdles I provide to their schedule. The best.

I’m extremely grateful.

That's an important job though. With teams and media releasing more and more content as video, it's important for someone to put those quotes in writing for people like us to read. He also likes digging into the stats to provide more context or interest to what he's writing about. It's nice to be able to go to one of his article's for a quick read of post game quotes instead of having to watch multiple videos.

I’m not trying to take anything away from the guy. He’s great at what he does. Just that he’s limited in what he can do since he’s employed by the Pels.

For example, Kushner can write an article about how the city and fans deserve better, whereas Eichenhofer cannot. If the Pels don’t want him to say something, he doesn’t say it.

Seth Dunlap does plenty on the Pels. Garic, Bobby, etc. who's on earlier not as much but they're not really fountains of knowledge on the subject so it might be for the better.

FWIW, recent yearly polls in the Boston area typically find sports fans placing the near-dynastic Patriots no better than third, and some years as low as fourth in perceived importance.
