The relationship between the Spurs and Kawhi Leonard is broken and it's gotta be put back together again before the Spurs are going to make that kind of a commitment to a player [the new SuperMax] and that's going to take a lot of talking, communication and some compromise here in the next few months before the Spurs can make that offer. But the idea that an organization like the Spurs are going to just blindly walk in and give the biggest contract in franchise history to a player who has behaved the last few months like he doesn't want to be a part of them is...it's not going to happen that way, so there's a lot of repairing that's going to be done before they even make that offer I believe.

Video of Woj LINK

I don't know what came first, Kawhi acting like he didn't want to be there or the Spurs not wanting to pay market price for their star player, but this isn't sounding good for the Spurs, which is good for the Pels.

The Spurs have been willing to pay market price for their star before. They just tend to get “hometown discounts” toward the end of that star’s career so they can build a new team.

I’d say it is Kawhi acting like a bitch and not wanting to come back this year because either a subpar season or another injury would tank his value.

I'd give them anything not named AD or Jrue. I'd give them as many draft picks as rules allow. You want 3 First Round picks? We'll give you 2019, 2021, 2023. Done.

Obviously we would still be outbid and couldn't get him, but goddamn. Jrue + Kawhi + AD would be monstrous.

That team would be decent at on ball defense.

3 picks? Hell, not like Dell will use them anyway.

Wasn’t Buddy the first guy we drafted in the first since Austin Rivers?

Even if we had more assets there is no way they would trade him not only in conference, but in division. However, Kawhi leaving our division and heading East is still a good thing.

Agreed. There is no chance whatsoever we would get him. I guess he could be the move the Celtics finally make?

It's weird hearing all of these leaks from the Spurs, a team that is typically quiet and "leak proof". Everything that you hear here is strategy from the Spurs front office.

all of that was straight up woj speculation.
I highly doubt anyone in the spurs org would use the word “broken” to describe their relationship with kawhi

Right, I don't think the Pels have a shot at getting him. And he should have good trade value so trading him wouldn't necessarily knock the Spurs out of the playoff race. Maybe they could get something like Beal and Porter for Kawhi/Gasol/Filler.

It did seem strange that he says this very negative thing but acts like it all is going to work out in the end.

its the juiciest story of the coming offseason, and these writers just cannot help themselves from gigging the once untouchable spurs

kawhi will come back, talk it out and sign his max.

It will be interesting to see what they get for him. It is an odd situation ongoing to say the least with the injury. Teams are going to want assurances that he has not gone off the deep end with him missing the playoffs to rehab and not even providing reasons while Pop is basically calling him and his people out in interviews. I do believe that there has been irreparable harm done and Kawhi is gone.

as if that matters one bit.
There are no prizes for winning your division. You play to win a championship. You can't win a championship if you can't beat every team. Where ever he would end up, you'll probably have to face that team in the playoffs at some point. You trade him to whatever team makes you the best offer.

This isn't MLB where division titles matter, or even the NFL where your division opponents are the teams you play twice. You play almost every western conference team 4 times, and if Adam Silver starts doing the best 16 teams, then it really won't matter.

You have to play against him more often which can present optics issues and it was reported with respect to the rumors of Kawhi to LA, that one of Popovich’s cardinal rules is not to help Western Conference rivals.

I also think that unless Kawhi poisons the well the better returns will come from the East as well. Boston and the Wizards would certainly be interested and could beat a package of Niko/Moore/Picks.

Already have seen multiple Boston fan tweets saying they would not give up Tatum or Brown for a healthy Kawhi. I am so happy that is on the Spurs fans now.
