I’m hearing something else is missing here. Possibly the “deferments” on picks we’ve heard about from @WindhorstESPN.

But sources tell me this isn’t the complete pick haul.

But wait, there's more

I understand that part. What I'm wondering is basically if there's a way via swapping that we wind up with the Lakers pick in '22, '23, and '24 if their '23 pick is higher than ours.

Yes, absolutely.

Because Boston did just that by drafting at the Nets' position for like 5-6 straight years between getting their pick outright and swapping picks with them.

Man I can't wait for the dust to settle on this. The 3 picks alone was a good haul, the swaps makes it an outstanding haul, how can it get better?

Got it, thanks. Incredible trade for the Pels considering Tatum was off the table and NYK likely weren't going all in with KD suffering his injury.

It's possible to have a one year deferment on each pick, meaning that we can say "Don't want it this year, we'll take it next year".

Having those rights means that we can refuse their picks when it is near the end of the first (say, 30) and get their pick next year when it should be lower.

The limitation is that you can only defer a pick for one year. And, if we have future picks coming after that, it affects those too.

Ex - We defer the 2021 pick to 2022. If we have a 2023 pick, it gets deferred to 2024 as well because the Lakers can't send out the 2022 and 2023 picks since those are consecutive future firsts.

Lebron has played over 56,000 minutes in the NBA. He has to start popping ligaments soon.

Well he tore his groin carrying the Lakers last season. And he's now one year older and playing with a guy who has only played about 70+ games in a season about twice in his career.

How does this work? What determines if its 2021 or 2022?

If the Lakers' pick ends up as #8 or lower in 2021, which is highly unlikely, they keep it.

For that to happen, they have to finish outside the playoffs and either win the lottery OR be in the bottom 5-7 teams in the league and have the lottery go chalk to where they don't get bumped to 9.

Barring hell freezing over, that pick is conveying in 2021.

I wish Griffin could have made it where we swap our second for first if we had the better pick and they had a later first round pick.

You would have thought they wouldn’t have had a top 8 pick this season either.

I'd rather think of it as the Pels win the NBA Championship 1 of those seasons while the Lakers win the lottery

Pels get #1 overall... Lakers fall all the way to #30

Under the old lottery odds, they'd probably have picked about 11th.

If they have AD, LeBron, and supposedly a third star, the only way they miss the playoffs is an orgy of injuries.

EDIT - Even under the current odds, they wouldn't have picked 4th in any previous draft because this is the first one to have the lottery dictate the first four picks rather than the first three.
