According to Bontemps:

The Pelicans will get the following picks from the Lakers, league sources tell ESPN:

No. 4 pick in 2019
Top-8 protected in 2021, becomes unprotected in ‘22
Unprotected swap in ‘23
Unprotected first in ‘24
Unprotected swap in ‘25

Tremendous haul for David Griffin & the Pelicans.

So he, Windhorst, and shelburne seem to be on the same page with this so I’m assuming this is true

If the Lakers end up with a better 1st round pick than us, we get to swap and take their pick, they take our pick. If not, no swap.

If LA's pick is better than ours in that year, we have the right to swap places with them.

This was a huge part of the Celtics-Nets trade because the Nets fell off majorly while the Celtics greatly improved a year or two after the trade. So the Celtics would regularly get top 10 picks despite being in the playoffs.

I actually like this trade a lot.

As of now, it looks like we won. At a minimum, we didn’t lose this trade.

Would have rathered Tatum and Brown but I’m not at all disappointed given the volume of firsts.

Watch the Lakers win the lottery in 22.

And then traded down two spots to get the best player in the draft in exchange for some other assets including a lottery 1st this season.

Can someone clarify to me if the Lakers can trade multiple firsts in a row via swaps like this or does the rule still apply? Like, say if the Pels get the unprotected '22 and '24 for certain and the Lakers hit on the lottery in '23, can the Pels swap at that time or would it not be allowed due to the rule about trading firsts?

There's something about deferment that clarifies that

Swaps mean that if the Lakers win the lottery and we are 14th, we get #1 and they get #14. We do NOT get both picks.
