make it so player under the tag refuses to report, he forfeits his salary and the team can tag hm again the following year

Now that would help, though the players' union likely never goes for that.

It also doesn't account for the AD and Harden situations. They reported, hell AD even forced his way to actually playing. Harden just stopped trying but reported and played.

They did that because it’s just a waiting game and only a matter of time before they know they can get out of their contract and go where they want. If there isn’t a light at the end of the tunnel, the team’s hand isn’t forced, and the player is no longer under the delusion that they can call their shots and go where they want, when they want.

at the end of the article bunch posted

The league is wary of players trying to force their way out after signing deals that are explicitly designed to allow teams to hold onto stars they've drafted, especially so as signs of discontent emerge in other situations (e.g. Zion Williamson in New Orleans).

they just had to get that in there

I just don't see how 2 years of a franchise tag left with a team is any different than the current 2 years left on your deal.

I don’t follow the transaction rules of the NFL nearly as much as I do with the NBA, the franchise tag used to be able to be used multiple times right? Or did I imagine that?

You can use it 2 times, maybe even 3 but not quite sure on that.

You can use it 3 times but that last time is so expensive that it doesn’t happen.

You would have one player getting about $40m guaranteed in salary, no offset of signing bonus across seasons.

The Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers have engaged on trade discussions for Ben Simmons. The talks centered around a swap of Simmons for C.J. McCollum, but died due to Philadelphia seeking multiple first round picks. Daryl Morey reportedly asked for three first round picks and pick swaps in the intervening years, in addition to McCollum.

Cut it down to 2 picks from Portland and have Philly throw in Maxey and I think they're closer.

Depends on how serious Morey is on a deal.

Morey is effectively asking for the haul we got for AD. Main difference there is that Simmons is locked down on a max contract while AD was entering his final season and had an option to become a FA after the season.

Simmons is no AD offensively but a young player locked up for 4 years is pretty valuable.

Except for the part where he's proven he's willing to sit out and not honor his contract if he's done with you.

If that were the standard, no one would have CP3, AD, Harden, or numerous other stars on their roster.

Morey is overplaying his hand.

Simmons would actually make that Portland team kind of interesting, and probably make them a tougher out in the playoffs, but that’s a ridiculous asking price for Simmons.

I think McCollum is a good trade target for Morey, but I don't think his ego will allow that trade to occur when he basically had Harden on the table for Simmons last offseason.

Morey should hopefully recognize that there was no world short of trading the house, and everything else, that Fertitta would have gave Morey Harden.

Possibly not even then by some accounts.

From an outsiders perspective we can see that, but I don't know that Morey's ego will allow him to realize that, and adjust his asking price this season.

Yeah I agree that the biggest holdup to any deal is seemingly Morey’s ego…which I don’t see him letting go of(though in one respect, fricking Klutch’s reputation and putting a line in the sand with this superstar diva bullshite, I’m happy).

Which all of this is a bit of a shame because Embiid is one of the better superstars from a team loyalty/character perspective in some time.

He deserves better than Simmons, and deserves better than seeing his prime squandered due to a GM’s ego.

Looks like the solution is the obvious one -- just stand up to Klutch.
